Hannsjörg Kowark
Hannsjörg Kowark (born August 3, 1951 in Stuttgart ; † June 14, 2018 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German historian and librarian . From 1999 to 2018 he was head of the Württemberg State Library in Stuttgart.
Life
After attending grammar school in Stuttgart and graduating from Reuchlin grammar school in Pforzheim , Hannsjörg Kowark joined the armed forces , which he left as a lieutenant in the reserve . From 1970 he studied history and German at the universities in Paris , then in Stuttgart, where he received his doctorate in 1978 on French Naval Policy 1919–1924 and the Washington Conference . From 1978 to 1980 he completed his training as an academic library service in the University Library of Tübingen and in the librarian training institute of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in Cologne . He wrote his thesis on Georg Leyh , who headed the Tübingen university library from 1921 to 1947.
After completing his training as a librarian, Hannsjörg Kowark moved to the Freiburg University Library in April 1980 , where he was head of the Department of Geography and Ethnology and then worked in the New Media department. In 1984 he was appointed Head of Users, in 1991 Acquisitions Manager and in 1994 Deputy Director. He left Freiburg in 1999 and moved to the Württemberg State Library, which he headed until his death in 2018.
Hannsjörg Kowark was married and had three sons and a daughter.
Act
In his work on naval history, Hannsjörg Kowark focused on French naval history, to which he wrote in 1998 with the title The End of the French Fleet in World War II. Toulon 1940–1944 wrote a fundamental paper on the self-sinking of the French fleet in 1942 in German-speaking countries.
In Freiburg, the activity as a librarian came to the fore, leaving less time for historical research. Since he took over the management of the Württemberg State Library, the promotion and further development of this house has become the focus of his work. The focus here was the transition of the library into the digital age including modernization of the IT, digitization workshop, multimedia workstations and, as a second focus, starting with the first planning from 2004, the spatial expansion of the state library, including additional space for books, new user workstations - especially group work and Multimedia spaces - and the increased switch from magazine lending to open-access lending.
In addition to his professional activity in the libraries, Hannsjörg Kowark was a member of the International Commission for Military History and a long-time employee of the Marine-Rundschau , where he headed the specialist department for the foreign navies and published in particular on French naval history. He was involved in the commission for historical regional studies in Baden-Württemberg and in the advisory board of the Baden-Württemberg Cultural Heritage Foundation. Furthermore, he supported and promoted international cooperation with the National and University Library of Strasbourg and the National and University Library of Zagreb . He opened the Württemberg State Library for events in the state capital of Stuttgart and took part in state garden shows or the Night of the Museums with the house, and supported the Antiquarian Prize for the promotion of book culture as a jury member .
