The Long Night of the Museums (in Switzerland Museum Night ) is the term used to describe joint campaigns by several museums in one location, which on an agreed day of action extend their opening hours into the night and jointly market this event. The aim of the action days is to draw attention to the facilities and to attract new groups of visitors.

The first Long Night of the Museums took place in Berlin in 1997 . A joint ticket gave visitors access to all participating facilities and the use of local public transport. Since the concept was successful and attracted a large number of visitors, museum nights are now being held in over 120 cities. The Nuit Blanche in Paris , the museums-n8 in Amsterdam , the Long Night of Museums in Vienna and the Night of Museums in Frankfurt and Offenbach am Main have also become famous.

A transnational action was supported by the Council of Europe in 2007 . On May 19, 2007, more than 2000 museums opened on Saturday evening in 39 countries. In Europe, the cities of Baku, Brussels, London, Paris, Strasbourg, Zagreb, Bratislava, Barcelona, ​​Madrid, Lisbon, Belgrade, Tallinn, Budapest, Venice, Lugano, Vilnius, Krakow, Warsaw and Bucharest took part.

In addition to museums, other cultural institutions can also be involved. So there are z. B. a Long Night of the Open Monument , in which private monuments and exhibitions are also open, until about 2017 in Stralsund and since 2011 in Baden-Württemberg .

Germany

Since the first event in 1997, there have been one or two long museum nights in Berlin every year. For the 20th anniversary, the 37th event took place on August 19, 2017 in around 80 participating museums; the number of visitors was given as over 30,000. The 40th Museum Night on August 29, 2020 was canceled due to the corona pandemic. 75 museums had already announced their participation.

The Blue Night has been taking place in Nuremberg since May 2000 . With up to 150,000 visitors, it is the largest culture and museum night in Germany. In addition to a large number of art stations in different forms of representation under a common concept with around a hundred individual events, there are also some performances by street artists . To underline the appearance, the entire street lighting and the individual event locations shine in blue. The core time of the event is from 7 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

The Long Night of Museums has also been taking place in Hamburg since May 2000 . In 2014, 54 museums and exhibition houses were involved and attracted around 30,000 visitors. The 17th Museum Night in Hamburg started on April 22, 2017 with another 54 houses and 800 events; almost 28,000 visitors were counted. 59 museums registered their participation for the event on April 21, 2018.

In Frankfurt , the Night of the Museums has been held annually since 2000 with opening times from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. and is the second major annual festival around the museums there, along with the Museumsuferfest , when they are open longer. At the same time, the museums in Offenbach are also taking part in the event. Numerous galleries are also open that night .

Until 2013, the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region organized a joint museum night for the cities of Mannheim , Heidelberg and Ludwigshafen . A total of over 100 stations were involved.

In Leipzig , on the occasion of the annual Museum Night, Leipzig University also opens its numerous teaching and learning collections to the general public; the University of Applied Sciences HTWK organizes the Long Night of Computer Games . In 2014, Leipzig and Halle (Saale) hosted a joint museum night for the sixth time.

There is a long museum night in Bonn with opening times until 1 a.m. as part of the Museum Mile Festival, which has been held annually since 1995 .

The night views have been taking place in Bielefeld since 2002 . The museums and galleries are open from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. As a special feature, the theaters, churches and other cultural institutions also take part in the Museum Night. The offer of around 50 institutions is supplemented by light installations and theater performances in the open air.

Also in Bremen , Chemnitz , Coburg , Darmstadt , Dortmund , Dresden , Düsseldorf , Erfurt , Hanover , Jena , Karlsruhe , Kassel , Kiel , Koblenz , Cologne , Lübeck , Mainz , Meißen , Munich , Münster , Offenbach am Main , Oldenburg , Rostock , Long Nights take place every year in Stralsund , Stuttgart and Weimar . A Long Night of the Museums takes place in Lüneburg every 2 years, most recently in May 2016.

Austria, South Tyrol, Liechtenstein

Long Museum Nights have been held annually in Austria , South Tyrol and Liechtenstein at the same time since 2000 . ORF is the organizer . All participating museums are open from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. that day. Within certain areas it is possible to visit several museums with a shuttle.

The Long Night has so far taken place on June 17, 2000, June 9, 2001, October 5, 2002, September 20, 2003, October 9, 2004, October 8, 2005, October 7, 2006, October 6, 2007, October 4 2008, October 3, 2009, October 2, 2010, October 1, 2011, October 6, 2012, October 5, 2013, October 4, 2014, October 3, 2015 and October 1, 2016 (356,975 visits).

More than 650 museums were open during the tenth Long Night on October 3, 2009. The Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum in Bratislava also took part for the first time . A total of 443,500 visitors visited the museums in 2009. In 2010, too, there was a slight increase to 443,800 visitors. In the following years the number of visitors stagnated. Around 700 museums, galleries and cultural institutions took part in 2014. The number of visitors amounted to 421,424 people, of which just under 208,000 were in Vienna . In second place in a comparison of the federal states was Salzburg (39,712 visitors), ahead of Styria (38,889) and Carinthia (35,735). As every year, the Natural History Museum was in the lead with 16,790 visitors, followed by the Albertina (14,000) and the Kunsthistorisches Museum (9,530).

In total, more than five million visitors throughout Austria have taken part in the Long Night of the Museums (until 2014).

Poland

In 2003 the first “Noc Muzeów” was organized by the Poznań National Museum . All major Polish cities took part in the Museum Night in 2010.

Switzerland

In Switzerland there are museum nights in Basel (since 2001), Bern (since 2003), Lucerne , St. Gallen and Zurich (since 1999).

Slovakia

The Long Night of Museums ( Noc múzeí a galérií ) has also been held in Bratislava since 2005 . In 2013 museums, galleries and cultural institutes from fifty Slovak cities took part.

Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic, the Museum Night has been held since the mid-2000s, but not on a single date. In 2012, 39 institutions took part in Prague with around 200,000 visitors.

The great success of the Long Night of the Museums has inspired the public relations work of other areas in different countries and established the event form “ Long Night ” in various areas of culture, science, churches and retail.
