Long night

A long night is a form of event in which the opening times of one or more similar sites are extended into the night hours and can be visited with one ticket. In German-speaking countries, the Long Night of the Museums is particularly well known.

The beginnings of long nights

The term "long night of ..." for events spread in the late 1980s / early 1990s, especially in the literary world.

  • The International Society for New Music Section Austria organized for the first time on November 6, 1987 (and then until around 2002) under the name "Long Night of New Sounds" a concert program by young Austrian composers from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. in all halls and in the foyer of the Wiener Konzerthaus . There were already several stations, but they were all under one roof and the increase in opening hours was moderate.
  • In 1989 the annual reading The Long Night of Literature or The Long Night of Coffee House Literature was reported, which was organized by the Club of Viennese Coffee House Owners on April 21 to mark the tenth anniversary of literature in a café with nine authors , starting in three coffee houses and with a midnight finale in Café Central . (Another 1989 event on November 17th.) On November 15, 1990, the event took place in seven coffee houses with authors and actors. There were various venues for events, but the opening hours were not extended.
  • Also in 1989, The Long Night of Literature with well-known Austrian writers was held at the Forum Stadtpark in Graz and broadcast live on television for three hours. In the following year, a contribution was made for the ORF program “ kunst-pieces ”.
  • In 1990 the first Long Night of Authors took place in Bingen am Rhein as a successful attempt by the INKAS (Institute for Creative Writing) .
  • On the occasion of the Wiesbaden booksellers' days, the Long Night of Poets - The Literature Festival took place on April 5, 1990 in the painter's hall of the Hessian State Theater Wiesbaden .
  • In 1992, as part of the 6th All-German Writers ' Congress of the Free German Association of Authors, a Long Night of Authors took place on the Wartburg from February 28 to March 1 .
  • On January 17, 1994, the first Long Night of Radio Drama took place with the award of the Radio Play of the Year 1993 award in the Wiener Funkhaus as a radio broadcast and public event. The event was later expanded to include other Austrian cities.

Working together for long nights

For the Long Night of the Museums in Berlin , museums first came together in 1997 to present their collections to a large audience at an unusual time. This successful model was later taken up in numerous cities and countries and also adopted by organizers from other areas, including a. by churches, academic institutions and companies.
