history

The "Long Night of Research" took place in Austria for the first time in 2005. After a two-year break, it took place again in 2008 and has been taking place regularly at the beginning of November since then. The participating cities were constantly changing. In 2008 it was Vienna , Wiener Neustadt , Graz , Klagenfurt , Innsbruck and Salzburg , in 2009 Dornbirn , Krems an der Donau , Tulln and Linz were added instead of Wiener Neustadt and Klagenfurt . In 2010 Vienna, Salzburg and Graz were again missing, while in addition to Dornbirn, Klagenfurt, Linz, Krems, Tulln, Wiener Neustadt, Eisenstadt , Pinkafeld and Güssing also exhibited for the first time . The Long Night of Research has been held biennially in all federal states since 2010, and has been held in April since 2012.

The Long Night of Research on April 27, 2012 was prepared by regional organizational teams across Austria. With 1,382 stations at 184 locations in 24 regions in 8 federal states, this was the largest science event to date with around 100,000 visitors. In 2014, the LNF was able to increase its success: with over 1800 stations - for the first time in all nine federal states - and 136,000 visitors, the largest science event to date in Austria took place on April 4, 2014. Most recently, the “Long Night of Research” on April 22, 2016 motivated over 180,000 visitors across Austria. They were offered an extensive and varied program in 35 regions with 253 exhibition locations at 2181 stations. The eighth Long Night of Research on April 13, 2018 attracted 228,000 visitors to 265 locations in all nine federal states and offered the opportunity to enter into dialogue with researchers and learn interesting facts about current projects and research results. The next Long Night of Research will take place across Austria on May 8, 2020, celebrating its 15th anniversary.

Organizer and client

The agencies GPK / brainiacs acted as concessionaires and organizers on behalf of the ministries BMVIT (Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology), BMWF (Federal Ministry for Science and Research) and BMWFJ (Federal Ministry for Economy, Family and Youth).

In September 2008 a “Long Night of Research” took place as part of the “European Researchers Night 2008” in Linz, Upper Austria. This event was not financed by the federal ministries mentioned above, but from funds from the State of Upper Austria and the European Commission.

In 2010, the Long Night of Research was organized independently for the first time by five participating federal states with regional teams. This model was retained and also represented the organizational form for 2012. The Council for Research and Technology Development was the initiator and mastermind of the LNF. The council coordinated and supported the participating federal states. In 2014, the nationwide measures were financed by the Federal Ministry of Science and Research (BMWF), Federal Ministry of Economics, Family and Youth (BMWFJ) and the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT). The FFG carried out the legal and financial processing. The Council for Research and Technology Development (RFTE) is actively involved in coordinating the content and communication together with AKZENT-PR between the departments and the federal states. The coordination of the nationwide implementation measures with the departments takes place in an advisory board. Representatives of the federal states are responsible for operational processing in the regions. The performance is presented by the scientists and researchers.

For the Long Night of Research (LNF16) on April 22nd, 2016 and the LNF18 on April 13th, 2018, this structure was or will be largely retained: the nationwide measures of the LNF16 were implemented by the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (BMWFW) and financed by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) and supported by the Federal Ministry of Education (BMB), which actively involves schools. The Council for Research, together with Akzent-PR, takes on the coordination between the federal government, the federal states and all the organizational teams involved. In the run-up to the LNF16, young people were involved in a competition for the first time, in which they could ask and win their “research question”.
