Long book night

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Long Book Night (in Oranienstraße) has been a joint campaign by tradespeople, public institutions and initiatives from Oranienstrasse in Berlin 's Kreuzberg district , which has been held annually on a Saturday afternoon and evening since 1998 , at which readings and campaigns on the medium of books are held. It is one of the first initiatives of its kind; today, similar concepts can be found almost weekly in spring in Berlin alone, alongside the Long Night of Museums (since 1997) and that of the Sciences (since 2000).

History of origin

The Long Book Night took place for the first time in 1998 with 17 events at twelve locations around Oranienstrasse. Over the years the number of events has grown, in 2005 there were already more than 30 venues, in 2011 around 50, including the Kreuzberg Museum , the Werkbundarchiv - Museum der Dinge and the Club SO36 . After a high point in 2013, the Long Book Night has been based again since 2014 on the initiative of the participating venues and on a more intimate setting, but in 2015 there are again over 30 venues with around 100 events.

To this day, the Long Book Night is largely organized by the Comic Shop Modern Graphics , the Kreuzberg Museum as well as the bookstores Dante Connection , Kisch & Co and the city library at Kottbusser Tor , which is part of the “Lange Buchnacht e. V. ". The individual events are on the initiative and under the responsibility of the various venues, in addition to bookshops, libraries and museums, as well as many bars and cafes. The aim of the campaign is to “network the most diverse areas of neighborhood life, across all generations, linguistic and cultural milieus ”.

In 2010 around 15,000 visitors took part.
