Richard Ziegler
Richard Ziegler ( pseudonym Jean Georg Vincent , Robert Ziller ; born May 3, 1891 in Pforzheim ; † February 23, 1992 ibid) was a German painter , draftsman and graphic artist .
Life
Richard Ziegler, son of an elementary school teacher and high school graduate at Reuchlin-Gymnasium , then attended the Shakespeare Grammar School in Stratford-upon-Avon in Great Britain in 1910 and 1911 . As a result, he turned to the study of German at the University of Geneva , the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald , which he, interrupted by his participation in the First World War , in 1919 in Heidelberg with the Doctorate to Dr. phil. completed.
The autodidact subsequently embarked on an artistic career. In 1925 he moved to Berlin , where he took part in the November group exhibitions from the following year . In 1925 he married Mathilde Rosenthal, a relative of Max Liebermann , from whom he divorced in 1928. At the end of 1932 Richard Ziegler emigrated to Yugoslavia with his Jewish fiancée and later second wife Edith Lendt , where he lived mainly on the southern Dalmatian island of Korčula until 1937 . During this phase of his life, Ziegler, an avowed opponent of the National Socialists , created three anti-fascist portfolios, which in particular portray the “leaders” of National Socialist Germany.
In 1937 Richard Ziegler went to England , in 1938 he married Edith Lendt. Interned as an "enemy alien" in Huyton near Liverpool from July to September 1940 , he was subsequently assigned to the British Ministry of Information and the American War Office of Information during the war. He also worked under the pseudonym Robert Ziller as a press illustrator and book illustrator for “ Die Zeitung ” , “Die Auslese” , “Lilliput” and “ Picture Post ” in London . Ziegler, who had lived with the Englishwoman Susan Snow since 1944, received British citizenship in 1948 .
Richard Ziegler spent his old age in his hometown of Pforzheim. In 1982 he founded the Richard Ziegler Foundation in Calw , to which he bequeathed a large number of his pictures and graphics. In 1991 Richard Ziegler received honorary citizenship of the city of Pforzheim on the occasion of his 100th birthday . He died in February 1992 just before the age of 101.
