Hirschensprung to the north

The Hirschensprung is a gorge-like incision between the Blattenberg (in the east) and the Bismer (in the west) in the canton of St. Gallen , Switzerland , on the left side of the Rhine Valley ; Main road 13 leads through it from Oberriet to Rüthi . Hirschensprung is also the name of a hamlet in the municipality of Rüthi at the lower end of the gorge.

geography

The road runs from the hamlet of Rehag in the municipality of Oberriet, where it is 447  m above sea level. M. reaches the highest point, between the rocks in a southerly direction to the industrial area of the municipality of Rüthi ( 426  m above sea level ) down. On the western side of the Hirschensprung it rises towards the Bismer and on to the Kamor ( 1751  m above sea level ). To the east of the passage, the Blattenberg ( 551  m above sea level ) extends almost to the Rhine .

history

In earlier centuries the Hirschensprung was the only connection route on the left side of the Rhine in the Rhine Valley. On the eastern side of the Blattenberg, the Rhine with its floods was a danger for travelers. Only the correction of the Rhine at the beginning of the 20th century made it possible to build the railway line and the motorway on the side of the Blattenberg facing the river. The discovery of a Neolithic burial site proves that the deer jump was important from an early age.

In the early Middle Ages, the Hirschensprung was the border with Churrätien and also the language border between the Alemannic and Rhaeto-Romanic areas. So there is the hamlet of Plona above Rüthi, which goes back to these linguistic roots. This language barrier can still be seen today in the different dialects of the two communities south and north of the Hirschensprung.

Coat of arms of Rüthi

The deer jump is symbolically represented in the coat of arms of the political municipality of Rüthi. According to a legend, a stag was once pursued by hunters. He was able to save himself from the danger zone by a brave jump to the other side of the gorge.

The rock walls of the Hirschensprung are regularly checked for the risk of possible falling rocks. At night they are illuminated by headlights. The former military road block was removed again.
