Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul is a listed church building in Bad Driburg , a town in the Höxter district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The parish was founded around 1258, at least one previous church is attested. The church was repeatedly plundered during the Thirty Years War and in 1636 it fell victim to a great conflagration. The tower collapsed. The church was renovated until 1676. The church tower and the dilapidated north aisle were rebuilt. The church received a baroque interior. In 1823 the south aisle was demolished and then considerably enlarged as a three-bay complex. 70 years later the parish church was in a poor structural condition. The district president ordered the closure due to dilapidation . A larger new building at the same location was planned.

The neo-Gothic hall church was built from sandstone blocks from 1895 to 1896 under the direction of Arnold Güldenpfennig . Father Stephan Beissel and Carl Schäfer were on hand to advise. It is covered with hipped cross gable roofs. The building was equipped with a sweeping transept and rectangular choir flank chapels . The tower with a gallery and attached corner turrets is on the west side. In the clear interior, ribbed vaults rest on round pillars. The colored windows were made from 1896 to 1898 by the Cologne glass painting workshop Schneiders & Schmolz . The painting was done in 1909 by Eduard Goldkuhle. Most of the ornament panels were replaced in 1990. The building was extensively renovated in 2008/09. This included exposing and freshening up the painting, which was completed 100 years earlier.

The wood furnishings from the construction period come from the Wiedenbrück school .

  • The altars, neo-Gothic carved retables with cracks , were built by Becker and Brockhinke with the exception of the Marien Altar. The reliefs and figures come from Anton Mormann, they were cleaned in 2005. The stipites were downsized before 1960.
  • The high altar with folding panels shows a cycle of Christ on the inside and figures of the Saints Boniface, Elisabeth, Liborius, Theresia, Peter and Paul on the outside.
  • The Marien altar by Heinrich Schweppenstedde was furnished with a crescent moon Madonna by Franz Georg Goldkuhle.
  • A crucifixion between the unbeliever Thomas and the Ascension of Christ is depicted on the cross altar .
  • A pietà made of stone

  • The baptismal font from the 13th century is still from the previous church. It is shaped like a cup, with one foot in the shape of an upside-down cube capital.
  • The Way of the Cross reliefs of terracotta was burned 1867th
  • The pulpit, organ stage and case round off the equipment.

organ

The original organ with 27 registers was installed by Eggert from Paderborn in 1898 . During renovations in 1989, it was returned to the original sound. The instrument has mechanical sliders with 31 registers on two manuals and a pedal .
