Stained glass by Schneider and Schmolz
The workshop of the glass painting Schneider and Schmolz from Cologne-Lindenthal produced numerous sacred glass windows since 1882, especially in the Rhineland . Among other things, the company carried out reconstruction and supplementary work on some of the windows in Cologne Cathedral from 1891 to 1908, primarily on behalf of the canon and art collector Alexander Schnütgen .
Company history
The stained glass workshop was led by Paul Schmolz and Christian Schneider, who among others in the famous Linnicher glass painter Heinrich Oidtmann was formed. Before that, at the end of the 1860s, Schneiders was a student of the history painter and curator of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum , Johannes Niessen . The company's history began in workshops in the Severinsviertel and in the Belgian Quarter in downtown Cologne. In 1898 the company headquarters and workshops were relocated to Cologne-Lindenthal on Theresienstraße. Both artists worked together here until Christian Schneiders retired in 1916. Paul Schmolz continued to run a glass painting workshop in the northern old town, at Gereonshof, until the early 1920s.
The company mainly made church windows in the Rhineland. For the work the company u. a. the bronze state medal, the gold medal at the industrial and commercial exhibition in Düsseldorf (1902) and the gold medal at the craft exhibition in Cologne (1905). In addition, the workshop also received orders for public and private buildings, including for the Märkisch-Westfälischer Bahnhof in Bochum and for train stations in Essen and Gdansk. The stained glass also equipped several Cologne saloon steamers. Glass paintings from the workshop were found among others. a. in the Villa Hügel , at Satzvey Castle , the Drachenburg Castle , the Hirschburg , the Villa Puricelli and in the private villas of Cologne industrialists.
In Cologne, the company worked on well over 30 Catholic and Protestant churches and was responsible for equipping the Gürzenich , the historic town hall , the justice building , the seminary , the Wallraf-Richartz Museum , the new arts and crafts museum , the trading school at Hansaring and the building of the Civil society involved.

Cologne cathedral
As a result of the intensive collaboration with the canon and art collector Alexander Schnütgen , the Schneiders & Schmolz glass workshop was repeatedly involved in reconstruction work on the Gothic glass windows of Cologne Cathedral from the 1890s onwards . Mainly the lead, but also a different proportion of the medieval glass panes were replaced. In particular, the reconstruction of the panes made by Wilhelm Düssel in 1844 was largely revised again. Some discs were also made from scratch to reflect the type and style of the original discs. This interpretation was heavily criticized by the cathedral builder Bernhard Hertel, who was appointed in 1903 , so that the workshop was no longer involved in later work from 1908, including the king's window in the upper aisle of the choir and the All Saints' window in the St.
- 1891: Bernhard window and Christ cycle window in the north transept
- 1891: Reconstruction work on the Simon Judas Thaddäus window, in which 90% of the glass panes were replaced and the lead net renewed in 1891.
- 1901: Reconstruction of all windows of the Epiphany Chapel: approx. 50% renewal of the panes and new lead-lining of the older Bible window (1901), Epiphany window (1901) and 85-90% renewal of the panes and re-leading of the Peter and Maternus windows.
- 1901/1902: Reconstruction of the younger bible window of the Stephanus chapel, in which the rung spacing was redesigned, some panes redesigned and a new lead was made.
- 1902: Renewal and reconstruction of 90–95% of the glass panes and new lead-lining of the Thomas Johannes Baptist window and the ornamental carpet of the Michael Chapel on behalf of Alexander Schnütgen. During the reconstruction, glass panes from the window depot of the cathedral were used.
- 1907/1908: Reconstruction of the ornamental carpet in the Maternus Chapel, in which two thirds of the old panes and twelve carpet fields were replaced. The cost of the reconstruction work amounted to 2,400 marks.
One of the replaced original discs of the ornamental carpet with diamond wreath and interlaced leaves from the Marienkapelle is now in the Suermondt Ludwig Museum in Aachen , which acquired the disc (inventory number 79) from Schneiders & Schmolz.
