Thomas Ammann (born July 13, 1964 in Altstätten , Canton St. Gallen ) is a Swiss politician ( CVP ).

biography

Thomas Ammann is a trained businessman and has obtained a federal diploma. dipl. Have a banking specialist trained. He worked in industry and banking for several years. From 1997 to the end of 2016 he was mayor of Rüthi . From 2000 to 2016 he was a member of the St. Gallen Cantonal Council , where he campaigned as a politician for the concerns of the municipalities and rural regions. In 2008/09, he was President of the Council. In the parliamentary elections in 2011 , Ammann ran for the National Council . He was not elected, but reached the 1st substitute place at the CVP St. Gallen with 16,162 votes.

Ammann was politically active on the board of the CVP Rheintal und Rüthi. For the CVP of the Canton of St. Gallen, he was President of the Regional Study Commission (2001–2008). Since January 2011 he has been a member of the party leadership of the CVP Canton of St. Gallen. He also serves as the successor to Beni Würth as parliamentary group president of the CVP in the Cantonal Council.

In the 2015 parliamentary elections , Thomas Ammann ran for the State Council and again for the National Council . It was not enough for the election to the Council of States, but Ammann was elected to the National Council with 22,239 votes. In the 2019 National Council elections, he was not re-elected because the CVP lost one of three seats.

Ammann is married to Gabi Ammann-Pridgar and has four grown children.
