Barbara Gysi (born May 14, 1964 in Zurich , legal domicile in Buchs AG and Wil SG ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ).

biography

Gysi studied at the University of Zurich from 1983 to 1986 and graduated as a secondary school teacher for biology and geography. Until 1991 she attended the School for Social Work in Zurich and graduated as a social worker. With the graduation Gysi moved to Wil SG . Barbara Gysi worked as a social worker and social pedagogue until 1997. From 1997 to 2004 she was political secretary of the SP in the canton of St. Gallen. Barbara Gysi has been Vice President of SP Switzerland since 2012.

politics

Municipal and cantonal level

Gysi made her first political experience with the candidacy for the National Council in 1995. The following year she ran unsuccessfully for the St. Gallen Cantonal Council , but was elected to the city parliament of the municipality of Wil. In 1999 Gysi was able to move up to the cantonal parliament, but was not re-elected in the general renewal elections in 2000. In 2001 she was elected to the Wiler executive, the local council, where she took over the leisure and sport department. In the 2004 cantonal elections, Gysi was elected to the cantonal parliament with 3,438 votes. As city councilor of Wil, she was able to take over the social, youth and old age department the following year. In 2009 Gysi was elected President of the Social Democratic Group of the Cantonal Council. For the government council election in the canton of St. Gallen on March 11, 2012 Gysi was traded as a possible candidate. However, Heidi Hanselmann and Fredy Fässler were nominated at their party's convention .

National Council

In the National Council elections in 2011 , Gysi achieved the third-best result on the social democratic list with 17,331 votes, after the previous National Councilors Hildegard Fässler and Paul Rechsteiner . With Rechsteiner's election to the Council of States , Gysi was able to move up to the National Council. Barbara Gysi ran again in the 2015 National Council elections and was re-elected. In the National Council, Barbara Gysi is a member of the Commission for Social Security and Health and the Finance Commission.

Union policy

Barbara Gysi is President of the Federal Employees' Association (PVB). In 2018, she ran for the office of President of the Swiss Confederation of Trade Unions (SGB), but was defeated by Pierre-Yves Maillard .
