Thomas Brunner (born July 25, 1960 in St. Gallen ; resident in Valendas ) is a Swiss politician ( glp ) and has been a member of the National Council since December 2019 .

Personal and job

Brunner grew up in St. Gallen as the son of a claims inspector and a journalist. In the 1980s he studied natural sciences , geography and biology in Bern . He completed his studies with a thesis in applied climatology . Brunner lived in Bern for 17 years, where he worked as an environmental engineer in the private sector. From 2003 to 2015 he then worked as an air hygienist in the St. Gallen Cantonal Office for the Environment.

Brunner lives in St. Gallen.

Political career

According to his own statements, Brunner was influenced in his youth by personalities such as the Bern government councilor Leni Robert and the St. Gallen economics professor Hans Christoph Binswanger . Brunner is a founding member and since 2009 board member of the green liberal city of St.Gallen. He has also been a member of the St. Gallen City Parliament since 2009, where he headed the Green Liberals parliamentary group from 2017 to 2019.

After three unsuccessful candidacies in 2007, 2011 and 2015, Brunner was elected to the National Council in the Swiss parliamentary elections in 2019 . His choice came as a surprise. He was sworn in on December 2, 2019. In the National Council he is a member of the Commission for Science, Education and Culture.
