Róklas ( German  Rocklaß , 1933 to 1945 Eckwald ) is a small village in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship and belongs to the Gmina Wielbark (urban and rural community Willenberg ) in the powiat Szczycieński ( Ortelsburg district ).

Geographical location

Róklas is located in the southern center of the Warmia-Masurian Voivodeship , 19 kilometers southwest of the district town of Szczytno ( German  Ortelsburg ).

history

As early as September 12, 1765, the proposal of the Willenberg Chamber of Commerce ( Wielbark in Polish ) to “set up a village center at Rocklaß on Scheffelplatz” was approved by a royal cabinet order. However, it was not until October 4, 1782 that the founding hand-held was issued. In 1787 the buildings are inspected and found to be in good condition. But the poor fortunes of the residents were also noted. Even the reform measures in the middle of the 19th century did not improve economic conditions.

From 1874 to 1945 Rocklaß was incorporated into the administrative district of Kannwiesen ( Chwalibogi in Polish , no longer existing) in the East Prussian district of Ortelsburg . On December 1, 1910, Rocklaß had 186 inhabitants. They were soon able to benefit from an economic improvement that began in the 1920s, not least due to the regulation of the Omulef River (in Polish Omulew ).

Due to the provisions of the Versailles Treaty , the population voted in the referendums in East and West Prussia on July 11, 1920 on whether they would continue to belong to East Prussia (and thus Germany) or join Poland. In Rocklaß, 142 people voted to remain with East Prussia, Poland did not.

On June 22, 1933, Rocklaß was renamed "Eckwald". In the same year the number of inhabitants was 191, but fell again to 165 by 1939.

When all of southern East Prussia was transferred to Poland in 1945 as a result of the war , Eckwald was also affected. The village was given the Polish form of the name "Róklas" and is now a place within the Gmina Wielbark (urban and rural community Willenberg ) in the powiat Szczycieński ( Ortelsburg district ), until 1998 the Olsztyn Voivodeship , since then the Warmia-Masurian Voivodeship . In 2011 the number of inhabitants was 43.

church

Ecclesiastical was Rocklaß resp. Eckwald aligned to the city of Willenberg until 1945 : to the Evangelical Church of Willenberg in the church province of East Prussia of the Church of the Old Prussian Union and to the Roman Catholic parish church there in the Diocese of Warmia .

On the Catholic side, Róklas is still related to the parish in Wielbark, which is now part of the Archdiocese of Warmia . The Protestant residents are now orienting themselves towards the parish in Szczytno (Ortelsburg) in the Masuria diocese of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland .

Infrastructure

traffic

Róklas is three kilometers southwest of the DW 508 , which connects Jedwabno (Gedwangen) with Wielbark (Willenberg) . From Wesołowo (Wessolowen , Fröhlichshof 1938 to 1945 ) a road leads directly to Róklas. There is no connection to rail traffic .

school

During the reign of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. a village school was founded in Rocklaß. Classes are still given in the brick building that was rebuilt in 1904.

Culture, sights

Forest nature trail

In Róklas there is the forest nature trail " An der Sawitz " (Polish: Leśna ścieżka edukacyjna "Nad Sawicą" ), which leads around two kilometers as a circular route through the forest. Along the marked route there are boards and picture stands that provide information about the forest and the local forest management. The path begins at the forest car park and ends at the First World War cemetery.

Green cycle tourist route

The forest nature trail "An der Sawitz" is also the end point of a "Green Cycle Tourist Route " (Polish : Rowerowy Zielony szlak turystyczny ), which runs over a length of 34.80 kilometers. It begins in Kucbork (Kutzburg) , leads past the Zielone Góry (Green Mountains) , touches Sasek Mały (Paterschobensee) , makes a detour to the campsite at Głęboczek Lake , passes through the village of Wesołowo (Wessolowen , 1938 to 1945 Fröhlichshof) at the Omulef- River and ends after three kilometers in Róklas.
