The Gmina Wielbark [ ˈvʲɛlbark ] is a town-and-country municipality in the powiat Szczycieński of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in Poland . Its seat is the city ​​of the same name ( German Willenberg ) with 6508 inhabitants; the main town itself has 3035 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2019).

The municipality is located in the south of the voivodeship (in historical East Prussia ) and borders there on the Masovian voivodeship . In the north, the district town of Szczytno ( German Ortelsburg ) is about 15 kilometers away. The city of Olsztyn (Allenstein) is about 50 kilometers away.

The municipality of Wielbark has an area of ​​almost 348 km², of which around 35% of the area is used for agriculture and 58% for forestry. The population density is 19 inhabitants per km².

The waters include the Omulew (Omulef) and the tributaries Sawica (Sawitz) and Wałpusza (Waldpusch) .

history

The city Wielbark fell in 1945 to Poland and lost in 1946, the town charter . From 1975 to 1998 the municipality belonged to the Olsztyn Voivodeship . On January 1, 2019, Wielbark was restored to town and the municipality received its current status.

If the parish Wielbark belongs to the Deanery Szczytno , the parish Lesiny Wielkie (with the branch parish Księży Lasek (Fürstenwalde) ) is assigned to the Deanery Rozogi (Friedrichshof) .

The urban and rural community of Wielbark has excellent transport connections.
