Benedikt Würth (born January 20, 1968 in St. Gallen , resident in Berg SG and Rapperswil-Jona ) is a Swiss politician ( CVP ).

Life

Benedikt Würth attended the Friedberg grammar school in Gossau SG , after which he completed his law studies at the University of St. Gallen , where he obtained a lic.iur. HSG graduated. In addition, Würth completed a postgraduate degree in international and European business law (MBL HSG).

Würth is married, lives in Rapperswil-Jona and has two children.

politics

In 1996, Benedikt Würth was elected to the cantonal council for the CVP, where he chaired the CVP parliamentary group from 2008 to 2011. In 2000 he became the mayor of Jona selected. As mayor, he played a key role in the merger of the two communities of Rapperswil and Jona. From 2007, Würth then served as mayor of the merged Rapperswil-Jona .

In 2011, Benedikt Würth was elected as the successor to Josef Keller as a member of the government of the Canton of St. Gallen. From April 1, 2011, he took over the economics department of the Canton of St.Gallen. In 2016 he moved to the finance department. He has been President of the Conference of Cantonal Finance Directors since 2017.

On May 19, 2019 , Würth was elected to the Council of States to succeed Karin Keller-Sutter . On November 17, 2019 , he was confirmed in this office in the second ballot with 77,893 votes.
