Marc Mächler (born March 15, 1970 ; resident in Glarus ) is a Swiss politician ( FDP ).

Life and commitment

Marc Mächler studied economics (lic. Oec. HSG) at the University of St. Gallen . He worked for the Swiss bank UBS for over 20 years , most recently as Deputy Director for Private Customers in St. Gallen.

In 1992 Mächler became a member of the auditing committee in his local community of Zuzwil before he was elected to the local council in 1996. In 2005 he became President of the FDP of the Canton of St. Gallen ; he has been a member of the FDP since 1995.

Mächler was also political advisor at FC St. Gallen from 2008 to 2016 and from 2015 to 2016 member of the board of directors of the building insurance of the canton of St. Gallen (GVA). Since joining the government, he has been a member of the board of directors of St.Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke (sak), vice-president of the St.Galler pension fund (sgpk) and president of the Linthkommission. In 2018 he was elected to the board of the Conference of Cantonal Energy Directors (EnDK) and since June 2018 he has chaired the Minergie Switzerland association.

Mächler lives in Zuzwil, is married and has three children.

From 2000 to 2016 he was a member of the Grand Council in the Canton of St. Gallen (Cantonal Council), where he was a member of the Finance Commission for 12 years. In the government council elections in 2016, he was elected to succeed Willi Haag as the St. Gallen government councilor and head of the building department. In the general renewal elections of the St. Gallen government on March 8, 2020, Marc Mächler was re-elected as a member of the government with 67,316 votes and thus the second best result of all candidates.
