Mike Andreas Egger (born August 2, 1992 in Rorschach , resident in Berneck and Glarus Nord ) is a Swiss politician of the Swiss People's Party (SVP). He has been a member of the National Council since 2019 .

Live and act

Egger grew up with three sisters in Berneck SG . He completed an apprenticeship as a meat specialist in Disentis , which he graduated with honors in June 2011. He has been working for the meat processor Micarna since 2014 and has been a member of the board of the St. Gallen-Liechtenstein Meat Association since 2016.

career

He first came into contact with politics at the age of 13 when he was attending a youth parliamentary session. He then became a member of the Junge SVP in the canton of St. Gallen . From 2012 to 2016 Egger was President of the Junge SVP St. Gallen . In the cantonal elections on March 11, 2012, Egger was elected to the cantonal council and confirmed on February 28, 2016. He stayed in office until February 2019.

In the 2015 parliamentary elections , Egger ran on the SVP's list and missed the election to the National Council by almost 600 votes. Since Toni Brunner announced his resignation from parliament in November 2018, Egger moved up and was sworn in as a National Councilor in March 2019.

On January 2, 2019, he announced his candidacy to succeed Karin Keller-Sutter as Council of States . In the two ballots on March 10 and May 19, 2019, however, he had no chance as third-placed.

In the National Council elections on October 20, 2019, Egger was confirmed in office. He then founded a shared apartment in Bern with the two young national councilors Andri Silberschmidt (FDP) and Franziska Ryser (Greens).

Viewpoints

Mike Egger belongs to the conservative wing of the SVP. One of his political priorities was the fight for a cantonal “burqa ban”, which was adopted as a ban on covering up in the referendum on 23 September 2018.
