The Micarna AG , headquartered in Courtepin is a company of the Swiss retail group Migros . It is one of the leading meat processors in Switzerland. In addition to the trade, catering establishments and bulk consumers are also supplied. In 2019, the company employed around 3,400 people and generated sales of around CHF 1.7 billion .

history

From June 1958, the Federation of Migros Cooperatives (MGB) ran a butcher's shop in Winterthur , but was soon unable to keep pace with the constantly growing demand. That is why the MGB founded Micarna in the same year and began building a production plant for fresh meat and meat products in Courtepin . The then most modern meat product factory in Switzerland started operations on June 2nd, 1960. Over time, staff schools, laboratories and slaughterhouses were added. In 1966, Micarna decided to give up the operation in Winterthur, which had become too small, and to build a new, much larger production facility in Bazenheid . With the completion of the first construction phase on November 4, 1968, the gradual relocation of the departments began. This process was completed on August 14, 1969. The two locations have been operationally managed in a uniform manner since 1993.

In 1997 Micarna spun off poultry processing to Optigal AG, and in 2001 it took over the meat production plant in Ecublens from the Migros Vaud Cooperative . In 2003 she opened a new slaughterhouse and cutting shop in Courtepin. As part of a new expansion strategy, which was initially limited to growth opportunities within the Swiss market, Micarna took over the catering company Mérat & Cie AG in Berne in 2004 . In 2006 Micarna merged with Optigal AG and integrated it as the “Poultry” business unit, followed by the integration of MGB's fish business into the “Seafood” business unit in 2007.

The Natura Bündner Fleischtrocknerei in Tinizong was taken over in 2009, in 2012 the Favorit Geflügel AG in Lyss and in 2015 the Maurer Speck company from Flüh . In 2016 Micarna took over Gabriel Fleury SA in Granges , a specialist in Valais dried meat. In 2017, MGB integrated the egg and frozen food producer Lüchinger + Schmid, acquired two years earlier, into Micarna. The company Stauss Geflügel GmbH was renamed Oberschwäbische Geflügel GmbH in 2018 and its headquarters moved from Ertingen to Betzenweiler . The raw poultry material is produced in the slaughter and processing plant in Ertingen, which is then processed in Betzenweiler.

Micarna E-Direct

At the end of 2017, Micarna announced that it would launch the Micarna E-Direct app in the first quarter of 2018 . Animal producers become suppliers to Micarna ( direct sales ) through the app , and transport and accompanying documents are also processed via it. This renders commercial sales and thus cattle trade superfluous. Since 2019, Migros organic pasture beef has also been traded via the app, which led to an extraordinary general meeting of IG Bio Weide-Beef with many critical voices in advance . At the general assembly on March 14, 2019, the president of the IG was voted out and two thirds of the board resigned.

criticism

Around 93% of Migros' label poultry comes from Micarna's Optigal operations. In poultry production with “particularly animal-friendly housing” (BTS for short), around 4% of the animals still perish during the fattening period. The broadcast “Death is part of the business” on January 30, 2018 in the program 10vor10 prompted Micarna to submit a complaint to the SRG ombudsman . In the article, Micarna sees violations of the journalistic guidelines of Swiss radio and television , the guidelines of the Swiss press council and the principle of appropriateness and independence of the SRG. Ombudsman Roger Blum rejected the complaint. In his opinion, all essential questions were asked and dealt with in the program in question. The various parties had their say, were able to present their best arguments and respond to criticism. In July 2018, photos by the animal rights organization Pour l'égalité animale (PEA) from western Switzerland again showed that the Migros Optigal advertising does not even come close to reality .
