Pierre-Yves Maillard (born March 16, 1968 in Lausanne ; resident in Mossel ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ) and president of the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions .

After studying at the University of Lausanne , which he graduated with a licentiate , Maillard taught French, history and geography at the secondary school of Préverenges and at the C. F. Ramuz secondary school in Lausanne . From 2000 to 2004 he was regional secretary of the Smuv for the cantons of Vaud and Friborg .

Maillard was a member of the Lausanne municipal council from 1990 to 1998 , and then from 1998 to 2000 the Grand Council of the Canton of Vaud. From the 1999 elections to November 29, 2004, he was a member of the National Council . From December 1, 2004 to May 3, 2019, Maillard was State Councilor for the Canton of Vaud and headed the Département de la santé et de l'action sociale (Department of Health and Welfare). From 2004 to 2008 he was also Vice President of SP Switzerland. In the 2011 Federal Council elections , he was one of the two official candidates for the SP parliamentary group.

At its 56th Congress on December 1, 2018, the Swiss Trade Union Confederation elected him in the first ballot as the new SGB President. He is replacing Paul Rechsteiner , the long-standing SGB President , who resigned at the end of November 2018. Maillard took office on May 6, 2019.

Maillard is married with two children and lives in Renens .
