Nuria Gorrite (born July 6, 1970 in La Chaux-de-Fonds ) is a Spanish-Swiss politician and a member of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP) . She has been chairwoman of the Vaud State Council since 2017 .

Life

After studying humanities at the University of Lausanne from 1992 to 1996, Gorrite became a curator at the Musée Alexis-Forel in Morges . At the age of 22 she got into local politics and in 1993 she was elected to the local council, seven years later to the city council. In early 2008 she became mayor of the city of Morges after Éric Voruz was elected to the National Council . In 2011 she was re-elected for this post.

In 2007 she was elected to the Cantonal Council of Vaud , and in 2012 she was elected to the Council of State for the second time. In 2017 she was elected for another legislature; on June 15, 2017, she succeeded the previous State Council chairman and party colleague Pierre-Yves Maillard . She became the first woman in this position.
