His areas of activity were mainly oil painting and lithography , of which he published a New Year's lithograph every year until his death in an edition of 100 copies. Deutsch was a pioneer of European abstract expressionism and has been awarded a large number of art prizes and titles since 1956. In 1978 he received a. a. the Rembrandt Prize, in 1979 the Senate of the Accademia Italia delle Arte e del Lavoro awarded him the title of Accademico d'Italia with gold medal for his artistic work in Salsomaggiore-Terme , the Albrecht Dürer Medal followed in 1982. 1985 awarded him the Academia Italia the title of Cavalliere . In 1986 he was awarded the “Golden Torch of Fine Art” and the “Golden Palm of Europe” for his artistic work. In the same year, the Accademia Italia Calvatone was honored in the form of the Premio d'Italia award by his community of Rorschacherberg. "With obvious pride to know that a laureate of the Accademia Italia lives in the municipality of Rorschacherberg, the mayor Ernst Tobler presented the award including the certificate of honor."

Hans E. Deutsch was encouraged early on by his father, a factory owner. From 1944 to 1950 he studied painting and art history in Lucerne , St. Gallen and Munich , where he set up a studio in 1948 and made his first exhibitions. They took him to many galleries and museums in Europe and overseas. In 1950, Deutsch moved to Rorschach , but continued to work in his studio in St. Gallen until 1959. In 1959 he took up residence in Rorschacherberg above Lake Constance .

In his early years Hans E. Deutsch was on friendly terms with painters such as Jo von Kalckreuth , Otto Dix and Cuno Amiet , with Adolf Dietrich and Varlin (Willy Guggenheim), Hans Purrmann and Ernst Morgenthaler . With Jo von Kalckreuth he traveled a. a. 1952 to Greece and Tangier .

From his house in Rorschacherberg he had a wide view of the whole of Lake Constance, which was important for his personal work and which also strongly influenced him. Three countries meet here: Germany , Austria and Switzerland . This vastness of the landscape is clearly noticeable in Deutsch's work. The proximity to water and his love for Lake Constance unmistakably shaped his work. The play of colors in the water, boats, sails and seagulls kept returning as leitmotifs in his works. The landscapes and the vastness of the seascape, the moods of Lake Constance, but also the great seas, the impressions of which he brought home, shaped many of his works.

Deutsch also painted people, clowns and harlequins, in lush application of paint, opulent still lifes , deep blue lake idylls, the Rhine Valley with its vineyards, fields and settlements, boats on the jetty or ready for departure.

In addition to figurative and objective things, he also worked on free color compositions. He processed his works expressively with a certain abstraction, especially in the idiosyncratic treatment of perspective.

At home and abroad, Hans E. Deutsch took part in numerous exhibitions. His works hang in many public and private collections in Switzerland, Europe and overseas.

Hans E. Deutsch worked as an artistic advisor to the International Olympic Committee ( International Olympic Committee IOC) from 1965 to 1970 and was also an artistic advisor for Swissair until 1999 . In the 1980s, the University of Konstanz offered him a professorship in art studies, which he refused. He feared that the institutionalization of his work would restrict it or even lose his artistic freedom, the greatest good of the free artist. He remained an alert spirit, creative thinker and artist throughout his life until his death in 2014.

Hans E. Deutsch was a Freemason and a member of the Swiss Grand Lodge Alpina and the Freemason Lodge Humanitas in Libertate in the Orient St. Gallen.

As a freelance painter, Hans E. Deutsch was a member of the Thurgau artist group and the Society of Swiss Painters and Sculptors (GSMBA).
