Daniel Imhof (born November 22, 1977 in Wil , Switzerland ) is a former football player with Canadian and Swiss citizenship .
Career
The defensive midfielder is a native of Switzerland, but immigrated to Canada with his parents at the age of five. Imhof spent his youth as the son of a bush flyer in Smithers (British Columbia) . At the University of Victoria ("UVic") on Vancouver Island , the aspiring physical education teacher became a key player in the university's football team. He has two younger brothers who both play in the lower leagues in Switzerland. Brother Dominic plays for FC Tuggen and Christoph has played for FC Gossau and FC Bazenheid.
At the beginning of 1999 Imhof dared to make the leap into European professional football on his own. At the Swiss second division club FC Wil he completed a trial training session and was hired by then head coach Marcel Koller . Just one year later, Imhof moved with Marcel Koller to FC St. Gallen , with whom he won the Swiss championship a little later.
In the summer of 2005, Daniel Imhof followed Koller's call again and moved to VfL Bochum in the 2nd Bundesliga . At the end of the season, he and his comrades celebrated promotion to the Bundesliga . Imhof extended his contract with VfL Bochum in 2008 until the end of the 2009/10 season with a mutual option for another year. In January 2010, however, he returned prematurely to FC St. Gallen. During the winter break of the 2011/12 season, Imhof announced that he would end his football career at the end of the season. As a farewell, he won the Challenge League championship as captain with FC St. Gallen and was the last remaining player in the 2000 championship team to celebrate promotion.
Up until October 2010, Imhof had played a total of 36 games for the Canadian national team . In 2002 and 2003 he was part of the Canadian squad at the CONCACAF Gold Cup .
