Smithers is a Canadian town in the Bulkley River valley in northern British Columbia , halfway between Prince Rupert and Prince George .

history

The city was founded in 1913 as the regional headquarters of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway . The parish was named after the director of this company, Sir Alfred Smithers. In 1921 Smithers became the first registered parish in British Columbia. The development of local mineral deposits and agriculture ensured constant economic growth.

City Hall is located at 1027 Aldous Street. The new building was completed in 2004. Taylor Bachrach has been mayor since 2011.

The award of local self-government for the municipality took place on October 1, 1921 ( incorporated as Village Municipality ). The status of the parish has changed several times over the years and since June 27, 1967 Smithers has the status of a small town ( Town ).

Demographics

The 2011 census showed a population of 5,404 residents for the municipality. The population increased by 3.6% compared to the last census in 2006, while the population in the province of British Columbia grew by 7.0% at the same time.

The main industries are forestry, agriculture, tourism and mining. Most of the outfitters, wilderness lodges, wilderness tour operators and gold mines that are scattered in the great outdoors are supplied from here.

The median income of Smithers workers in 2006 was C $ 25,884 compared to C $ 24,867 in the province of British Columbia.

Transport links

The Highway 16 , also known as the Yellowhead Highway known connecting Smithers to Prince Rupert and Prince George . The city is connected to the Canadian National Railway and has its own airport, Smithers Airport.
