Openair rockamweier
The Openair rockamweier has been a free open-air festival that has been held annually in Wil SG (Switzerland) since 2001 and is one of the largest of its kind. In 2018, 17,000 spectators attended rockamweier.
The festival
For the 20th time on Friday and Saturday, 12./13. June 2020, the openair rockamweier will take place on the Wiler Weierwiese. What began in 2001 as a small open air event has developed into an important cultural event that attracts attention beyond the borders of the Wil region. The venue is centrally located at the foot of the picturesque old town, next to the idyllic water, surrounded by old trees. A record number of visitors was achieved in 2018: 17,000 visitors found their way to the meadows of the Wiler Stadtweier.
In contrast to other organizers, the rockamweier association does not organize the open air for profit, and around 140 helpers do valuable work. Entry has been free for all visitors since the rockamweier was founded. The event is financed through proceeds from catering and contributions from sponsors and patrons.
As a rule, up to ten bands appear on the Weier stage. Every year between 300 and 400 bands from all over Switzerland and abroad apply for a performance. One of the highlights in 2016 was the US Latino hip-hop band Delinquent Habits , which thanks to hits such as “Tres Delinquents” or “Return Of The Tres” with over 1.5 million singles sold alongside Cypress Hill, are among the most successful bands in the Genre include latino rap. Other highlights at rockamweier: Stiller Has , Raggabund , King Pepe , Gustav , Elijah , Chencha Berrinches , Paul Camilleri , Schein , San Dimas , Lazuli , Popa Chubby , Hank Shizzoe and Band. Great emphasis is placed on promoting musicians from the region, for example three to four Wiler bands performed on the Weier stage every year.
In addition to music, comedy and cabaret are also offered by cultural associations. In the afternoon there is a special program for children and families with “Kids on Stage”. When it comes to catering, the guests are not neglected either. Various providers entice you with specialties and cool drinks at fair prices.
Special events
Beizenfestival rockamfritag
The Beizenfestival rockamfreitag was held for the first time in the anniversary year 2005 and has enjoyed great popularity ever since. This event is also free of charge for visitors who can visit various old town locations filled with music in Wil SG . Mostly smaller bands play on rockamfritag. In addition, attention is paid to a balanced stylistic composition of the program. In 2018 rockamfritag will take place on May 4th. Rockamfritag will not take place in 2019.
Award
In 2008, the rockamweier association was awarded the Ria & Arthur Dietschweiler Foundation Prize. In 2010, the association was also awarded the city of Wil SG's recognition award.
