The history of the Westfalia trailer group began in 1844 when Johann Bernhard Knöbel opened a forge in Wiedenbrück . The company developed continuously until it was renamed in 1922 to Fahrzeugfabrik Westfalia - Franz Knöbel & Söhne OHG.

In 1932, Franz Knöbel developed the ball coupling, which has been used almost unchanged to this day.

Today, Westfalia Trailer Systems produces horse and other trailers under the name "Westfalia" in the Saxon town of Obergoseln .
