Francis of Strict

Franziskus von Streng (born February 27, 1884 in Fischingen TG ; † August 7, 1970 in Solothurn ) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Basel .

Life

The son of a Thurgau national councilor attended the Stella Matutina grammar school run by the Jesuits in Feldkirch from 1895 to 1903 . After studying in Leuven , Paris , Innsbruck and Lucerne , he was ordained a priest on July 12, 1908 . From 1908 to 1919 he was vicar at the Dreifaltigkeitskirche in Bern. In 1919 he became pastor at St. Clara Church in Basel , where he a. a. 1936 published his work The Secret of Marriage .

In 1936, Pope Pius XI was Francis of Strict . appointed Bishop of Basel. He was ordained bishop on January 24, 1937 in the St. Ursus Cathedral by the then Apostolic Nuncio of Switzerland, Filippo Bernardini .

In 1942 he published the hymn and prayer book Laudate and in 1947 a revised catechism . He was honored with an honorary doctorate from the University of Innsbruck and took part in the Second Vatican Council .

On November 3, 1967, at the age of 83, he resigned from his episcopate and was appointed by Pope Paul VI appointed titular bishop of Obbi and was then apostolic administrator in Basel.

Franziskus von Streng became Grand Officer of the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and co-founder of the Solothurn Commandery in 1964 .
