Josephus Mile

Joseph (us) Meile (* July 24, 1891 in Mosnang ; † January 6, 1957 in St. Gallen ) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of St. Gallen .

Life

After studying theology in Friborg, Meile was ordained a priest on March 24, 1917 and, after studying law in Friborg, was promoted to Dr. iur. utr. PhD. After pastoral activities, he became director of the Catholic Action in St. Gallen- Oberwaid in 1931 . In 1936 he became a resident canon and parish rector in St. Gallen. In 1938 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Dr. theol. H. c. from the University of Friborg.

On September 20, 1938 he was elected Bishop of St. Gallen and on September 26 of the same year by Pope Pius XI. appointed. On October 16, 1938, the future Pope Pius XII donated to him . and then Cardinal Secretary of State Pacelli the episcopal ordination . He died in office on January 6, 1957 and was buried in the St. Otmars Crypt of St. Gallen Cathedral .

From 1950 to 1957 he was the Grand Prior of the Swiss Lieutenancy of the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
