Albert Oesch (clergyman)

Albert Oesch (born April 19, 1897 in Balgach , Canton St. Gallen , † April 5, 1962 in Jerusalem ) was a Swiss Roman Catholic clergyman.

Life

After graduating from the Einsiedeln Abbey School, he studied philosophy and theology at the Canisianum in Innsbruck and in Switzerland at the University of Friborg . In 1920 he was ordained a priest. From 1920 to 1929 he was vicar in Flawil and in 1929 he became pastor in Thal.

Oesch was also president of the "Association de la faculte americaine de theology", a Swiss-American aid organization, and was significantly involved in the exile of the Innsbruck theological faculty in Sion from 1938 to 1940.

Oesch was well acquainted with the then Cardinal State Secretary Eugenio Pacelli, who spent his private holidays in the Abbey of "Stella Maris", today's St. Gallen University of Education in Rorschach . Pacelli, Pope Pius XII since 1939 . , commissioned Oesch in 1947 to restructure the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem in Switzerland and in German-speaking countries. In 1947, together with Bishop Josephus Meile , he was able to re-establish the Swiss Lieutenancy with a magistral delegation. Pope Pius XII appointed him as the first Grand Prior; In 1950 he was followed by Josephus Meile. In 1951 he gave the impetus for the re-establishment and first investiture of the Austrian Lieutenancy. Albert Oesch also became a member of the Consulta of the Order of Knights in Rome in May 1953.

Oesch was involved in numerous projects in the Holy Land , especially for the seminary in Beit Jala . He was in the cemetery of the Franciscan at Gethsemane at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem by Vincent Gélat buried.
