Mayo is a city and also the county seat of Lafayette County in the US state of Florida with 1,237 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Mayo is about 120 km southeast of Tallahassee .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 1237 inhabitants were distributed among 567 households. The population density was 589.0 inh / km². 60.6% of the population identified themselves as whites , 24.6% as African-Americans , 0.2% as Indians and 0.6% as Asian Americans . 11.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.0% to several ethnic groups. 17.1% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 32.4% of all households lived in 43.5% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 63.6% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.76 people and the average family size was 3.36 people.

32.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 21.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 21.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 34 years. 46.6% of the population were male and 53.3% were female.

The median annual income was $ 29,423, with 39.2% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 82.81% of the population and Spanish was spoken by 17.19%.
