Appenzeller Bahnen (meter gauge network)
This article deals with the meter gauge network of the Appenzeller Bahnen , in particular with the technical aspects and the meter gauge rolling stock.
Network topology
The meter gauge network of the Appenzeller Bahnen consisted of five routes until 2018, each of which was originally built by its own company. Gradually, the technical differences between these routes were reduced:
-
St. Gallen – Gais – Appenzell : cog railway 100 ‰ gradient, minimum curve radius 25 m, of which
- Gais – Appenzell workshop: Adhesion track 65 ‰ gradient, curve radius 100 m
- Gossau SG – Appenzell : Adhesion railway, 37 ‰ gradient, minimum curve radius 90 m
- Appenzell – Wasserauen : opened as a tram, adjusted to the standards of the Gossau SG – Appenzell line
- Altstätten – Gais : cog railway, 160 ‰ gradient
- St. Gallen – Trogen : tram with narrow flanges, 75 ‰ gradient, minimum curve radius 25 m, maximum width 2.40 m, contact wire voltage 1000 V; there was no track connection with the line to Gais
This resulted in four different requirements for the vehicles:
Abbr. | vehicles | drivable routes | Clearance profile |
---|---|---|---|
a | Adhesion vehicles | Gossau SG – Wasserauen and Appenzell – Werkstätte Gais | Car body 2.65 m wide |
az | Adhesion and gear vehicles for gradients of up to 100 ‰ | St. Gallen – Appenzell and Gossau SG – Wasserauen | |
azz | Adhesion and gear vehicles for up to 160 ‰ gradients | all routes except St. Gallen – Trogen | |
t | Tram vehicles | St. Gallen – Trogen | 2.40 m wide |
In 2018, the lines in St. Gallen were connected, the cogwheel line in St. Gallen was replaced by the Ruckhalde tunnel and the contact wire voltage was uniformly set at 1500 V direct current. In the inner city area of St. Gallen , the voltage of 600 volts remained in view of the intersections with the VBSG trolleybuses . Because of the grooved rails, wheel tire profiles are used as in the Karlsruhe model . So that both trams and other vehicles can run in the Appenzell – Teufen section, the control arms have been increased on all points . The same measure was also taken on the route to Gossau SG so that trams could be passed over.
Abbr. | vehicles | drivable routes | Clearance profile |
---|---|---|---|
a | Adhesion vehicles | Gossau SG – Wasserauen and Appenzell – Werkstätte Gais | Car body 2.65 m wide |
azz | Adhesion and gear vehicles for up to 160 ‰ gradients | all routes except Teufen – St. Gallen – Trogen | |
r | Adhesion vehicles for grooved rails and up to 80 ‰ inclines | St. Gallen – Appenzell with the Ruckhaldetunnel and Gossau SG – Appenzell for business trips | |
t | Tram vehicles | St. Gallen – Trogen | 2.40 m wide |
Freight transport
Originally, goods were transported in narrow-gauge wagons on the entire meter-gauge network. Freight traffic on the St. Gallen – Trogen route ended in 1991, but post transport in narrow-gauge freight wagons continued until 2007. On July 1, 1978, a trolley system was put into operation in Gossau in order to be able to transport standard-gauge wagons. Initially, the Gossau – Wasserauen line was operated, and from 1989 the roll-head system was expanded to include the Appenzell – Gais – Teufen line . From 1999, freight traffic was carried out on behalf of SBB Cargo . Over the years, however, the transport volume sank to 180 freight wagons or 4,400 t per year. Therefore, SBB Cargo stopped freight traffic at the end of 2003. As of August 1, 2010, the trestle system was taken out of service, which means that official transports are no longer possible. To this day, however, roller stands are still available. The remaining narrow-gauge freight wagons are used for official purposes.
vehicles
As early as 1981, the then SGA and AB had jointly procured five commuter trains (11-15 / 111-115) that had a uniform design, only the ownership labels were different.
After the merger in 1988, 16 new vehicles were put into operation in 1992/93 (four motor coaches, four control cars and eight PA 90 intermediate cars ), but they still had to adapt to the technical characteristics of the two predecessor companies AB and SGA.
The tram vehicles come from the Trogenerbahn , with the opening of the cross-city line in autumn 2018, 11 “Tango” ABe 8/12 multiple units will go into operation. At the same time, 5 three-part multiple units ABe 4/12 “Walzer” will be delivered for Gossau – Wasserauen and the newer, previous vehicles will be adapted as reinforcement modules.
The following vehicles have been running on the meter-gauge network of the Appenzeller Bahnen since the merger in 2006 ( discarded or sold vehicles are shown in italics, type designations in bold represent historic vehicles, designated according to the three-class system):
