Bern Tramway Society (2001)

The composition of the Berner Tramway Society

The Berner Tramway-Gesellschaft , abbreviated BTG , was a stock corporation which operated a historic steam tram on the Bern tram network between 2001 and 2018 . The transport company should not be confused with the original Berner Tramway Company from 1888. It was founded in order to be able to complete the restoration of the G 3/3 12 steam tram locomotive started by the Bern Tramverein (TVB) . In addition, a replica of a contemporary trailer was created . BTG was also working on the construction of a new compressed air tram based on the historical model, which was discontinued.

history

The legal form of a stock corporation was chosen in order to get the missing financial means and to be able to continue the stagnant work. This finally succeeded in 2002 when the Bern steam tram - not to be confused with the historic Bern steam tram in the Lucerne Museum of Transport - went into operation. The Berner Tramway-Gesellschaft was supported by the transport company Bernmobil . The corresponding repair, restoration and new construction activities could therefore be carried out in the workshops of the Eigerplatz depot . The share capital of 100,000 Swiss francs was mainly owned by Bernmobil (15,000) and the Bern Tramverein (10,000). The remainder were in the free float of individuals, with the majority being held by three private individuals on the board of directors. This consisted of the director of Bernmobil and a representative of the Bern Tram Association. The shareholders benefited every year from a free ride and in return did not pay any membership fees to the club's coffers. The direct consequence of these disadvantages caused by the stock corporation was the establishment of the Friends of the Berner Dampftrams Association on June 1, 2005. In the course of the establishment of the Bernmobil historique foundation at the beginning of 2018, management was completely ceded. The shareholders of BTG therefore decided on May 2, 2018 to dissolve and liquidate the company.

Air tram project

In 2005, the BTG launched a project called Air for the Berner Tram and began to rebuild a compressed air tram from 1890; the commissioning was originally planned for spring 2011. Worldwide there is currently only one other compressed air tram in Nantes, France . The air project for the Bern tram was financed by sponsors, donations and the newly founded Club 1890 . BTG's share capital, however, was not increased. The newspaper Der Bund reported on November 3, 2011 that the air tram project had been discontinued. The vehicle would have been considered a new vehicle, which would have required approval according to today's rules of technology for operation. Since today's requirements would not have been met by the historical replica, the project had to be abandoned. The car body that had already been started was handed over to the Museum of Transport.
