The Monte Nuovo ( Italian : "New Mountain") is a west of Naples in the municipality of Pozzuoli situated volcanic cone .
It was created in 1538 during the last volcanic eruption in the Phlegraean Fields . This phase of activity, which lasted from September 28 to October 3, 1538, was characterized by pyroclastic flows and by the extraction of large quantities of ash and lapilli . During these eruptions, an adjacent maar - the Lago d'Averno - was partially buried and its connection to the sea was closed.
Monte Nuovo is 133 meters high, the diameter of its crater rim is around 400 meters, that of the volcanic base around 1200 meters. The slopes of Monte Nuovo are covered with typical macchia vegetation, e.g. Some of them are now built on.
