BDeh 4/4 is the series designation for meter-gauge railcars with adhesion and gear drive of the Appenzeller Bahnen (AB) with the numbers 11 to 17.

history

Shuttle the SGA with a BDeh 4/4 in Appenzell , the left 4/4 ABe 42 of the AB .

After the decision to continue operating the St. Gallen-Gais-Appenzell-Altstätten-Bahn SGA at the beginning of the 1970s and foregoing the switch to bus traffic , the renovation of the outdated cog railway was initiated. The SGA wanted to order five two-part shuttle trains to modernize the rolling stock . Because the Federal Office of Transport (EAV) only approved four trains, the Appenzeller Bahn (AB) stepped into the breach. The AB, which was under a joint management with the SGA, financed the fifth cogwheel train as a pure adhesion railway in order to make it available to the SGA to compensate for its train services on the AB network . In 1978, the two railways were able to award the orders for the five BDeh 4/4 11-15 and the associated control car .

After a short time it became clear that the SGA was dependent on the fifth train to maintain its schedule. Five years after it was put into operation, AB sold it at the purchase price at the time.

technology

The vehicles were delivered in the course of 1981. The Flug- und Fahrzeugwerke Altenrhein (FFA) manufactured the car bodies for the railcars and control cars and the running bogies . The railcars only have one driver's cab . On the other side there is a car crossing so that they can only run together with a control car. The motor bogies with gear drive come from the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Factory (SLM) in Winterthur. The Adhäsionsantrieb was when driving on the 100 ‰ steep rack section jerk stockpile St. Gallen-Riethüsli uncoupled.

Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC) supplied the electrical equipment. Despite the hop control, the BDeh 4/4 heralded new territory. They are the first Swiss locomotives in which microprocessors are used for control and regulation functions .

The coloring with red paint and light gray decorative stripes was determined by the population. The trains are thus more visible on the many unguarded level crossings than in the traditional SGA green. The first four moves bear the SGA initials. The BDeh 4/4 15 with the ABt 115 control car was labeled “Appenzeller Bahnen” - also with a view to the upcoming merger .

The railcars of the first series have the following names and coats of arms:

The BDeh 4/4 of the SGA served as a model for the adhesion multiple units BDe 4/4 II of the AB and the Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ) delivered in 1985/86 .

BDeh 4/4 17 with exterior swinging doors in the St. Gallen branch station

In 1989 the Appenzeller Bahn (AB) and the SGA merged to form the Appenzeller Bahnen (AB). In 1993, the new railway company added the BDeh 4/4 II 16-17 and BDe 4/4 II 34-35 to its vehicle fleet . Although the electrical equipment with the hopper control was no longer up to date, the AB decided to replicate the vehicles built in the eighties for reasons of cost. The railcars of the second series can be recognized by the flush outward swinging doors instead of the folding doors built into a niche.

A lot had also changed with the delivery companies. The FFA became Schindler Waggon Altenrhein (SWA) and BBC, as the supplier of the electrical part, became part of the ABB Group .

In contrast to the vehicles in the first order, the railcars BDehh 4/4 16 and 17 can also run on the Altstätten – Gais route, the rack sections of which have a gradient of 160 ‰. Since the opening of the St. Gallen Diameter Line in 2018, the Altstätten – Gais line has been the AB's only meter-gauge line with a rack.

Sale to the Achenseebahn

AB BDeh 4/4 in Jenbach station

With the St. Gallen – Teufen line closure in the summer of 2018 before the opening of the diameter line, the AB only needed three of the BDeh 4/4 11–15 for the remaining Teufen – Appenzell section. On 11/12 On June 11th, railcars 11 and 12 were brought to the Achenseebahn in Jenbach . On October 24th, railcar 13 was transported to Tyrol. He will keep his advertisement for Appenzeller Alpenbitter . The remaining railcars and the associated ABt 111–115 control cars followed in autumn after the opening of the cross-city link. If the electrification of the Achenseebahn does not come about, the rack-and- pinion railcars are to be equipped with a hybrid drive . Given the tight financial situation of the Achenseebahn, it is questionable whether one of the two expensive options will come about. In addition, the bogies of the motor coaches and control cars would have to be converted for use on the Riggenbach rack of the Achenseebahn.

Associated control and intermediate cars

To form shuttle trains , associated control cars of the type standard car II were ordered from the FFA . In order to be able to form three-part trains, the lightweight steel cars B 71-73 and B 81-83 were prepared for use as intermediate cars from 1981 to 1984 . They received a multiple control line , automatic door locking, buttons for the stop request , loudspeakers and a suitable repainting in red.

For the second series, the AB procured control and intermediate cars of the newer type PA-90 . The ABt 121–123 control cars from 2004 complement the shuttle trains with a low-floor compartment .
