Appenzeller Alpenbitter is a Swiss bitter liqueur with around 30% alcohol, which was first produced in 1902 by Emil Ebneter in Appenzell . The liqueur made from “42 herbs and spices” has since been made according to almost the same recipe (cf. recipe change from 1960).
history
Inspired by the medicinal herbs in his homeland, Emil Ebneter began to experiment with self-brewed distillates. The result was a herbal product with a special taste that was “medically recommended”. In 1908 Ebneter's brother-in-law Beat Kölbener was added and the collective company Emil Ebneter & Co. was founded. In 2006 the name was changed to Appenzeller Alpenbitter AG .
To this day, Appenzeller Alpenbitter AG is a pure family business. She is represented on the board of directors by the third and fourth generation. Among them are the two keepers of secrets, Beat Kölbener and Walter Regli, who are responsible for the mixture. Components of the alpine bitter include gentian root , juniper , anise and peppermint leaves .
