The Regional League is the fourth highest league level in German ice hockey in the 2009/10 season . The regional leagues north, east, west and south-west are played as well as the Bayern league . The groups west and south-west play a joint championship round and then play-offs with the group north.

For the 2010/11 season, the league is divided into four regional groups, which means that almost all clubs in the North, East and West regional leagues move up into the league.

Regionalliga North

The Regionalliga Nord has increased compared to the previous season. New in the league were the EC Wedemark Scorpions (formerly Wedemark Farmers), the Crocodiles Hamburg , the SV am Salzgittersee under the name CRE Salzgitter Icefighters , a syndicate of the Bremer EC and the REV Bremerhaven 1b under the name SG Weser Stars and the Rostocker Piranhas from the top league. RL North will in future also include the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , which previously belonged to RL East. The 1b of Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg has withdrawn from the league.

The eleven teams played a single round from September. From February the best six clubs play a championship round, the remaining five a relegation round. The first two of the championship round finally play a play-off round with the Regionalliga West.

Regional League East

Nine teams take part in the Regionalliga Ost and play off the champions in a double round. The season started at the end of September. The champions were the Blue Lions Leipzig, although they had to file for bankruptcy shortly before the end of the championship.

The number of foreign players in the line-up was limited to three. In each game, three U23 players and one additional U23 player for each player who required a transfer card had to be called in - players with a license to play were not considered to be U23 players.

Regionalliga NRW / Hessen

The Regionalliga West (officially Regionalliga NRW / Hessen) has taken on the best team of the previous Regionalliga Hessen, the Young Lions Frankfurt. Also new to the league are EHC Neuwied and ESV Bergisch Gladbach as promoters from the Association League and EV Duisburg 1b as successors from the Association League . The Herner EV 1b and the EC Bergisch Land were relegated, the EHC Dortmund was promoted to the upper league , the Iserlohner EC 1b has withdrawn. As before, the league will consist of twelve teams in 2009/10.

A single round is played, after which the eight best clubs qualify for the championship round. A representative of the Regionalliga Süd-West (Rhein-Neckar Stars) also takes part. The teams in places 9 to 12 play a relegation round under the name Regional League Cup with the two best teams of the Association League NRW and the Hessen League . The first four of the championship round qualify for the pre-play-offs, the two winners of which play play-offs with the Regionalliga Nord.

Regionalliga South-West

Nine teams are taking part in the former Baden-Württemberg League, renamed Regionalliga Süd-West. New to the league is the newly promoted state league Stuttgarter EC under the name Stuttgart Rebels. The 1b team of SC Bietigheim-Bissingen played under the name "Stuttgart Rebels" in the preseason . The team of the EC Eisbären Eppelheim was no longer reported in favor of the team of the Rhein Neckar Stars, which is organized in cooperation with the Mannheim ERC and the EC Eppelheim and plays in Eppelheim.

Eight participants play a one and a half-fold round (each team plays three times against each other). The Rhein-Neckar Stars play a single round and then take part in the championship round of the RL West. All other teams have renounced participation and therefore no opportunity for promotion.
