The Eissportgesellschaft Hannover (ESG) was foundedin May 1948, from which today's Hannover Indians emerged . The Hannover Scorpions , who became German champions in 2010, celebrated the greatest success of a club from Hannover. The Scorpions have their origin in Wedemark , a place in the Hanover region .

organization

The organization of ice hockey at the state level is subject to the Lower Saxony Ice Sports Association (NEV) , which is affiliated to the DEB . The NEV is also the umbrella organization for the sports of figure skating , ice stock sport and speed skating . In addition to organized ice hockey, there are also numerous hobby teams in the Hanover region that compete against each other in various hobby leagues.

history

Beginnings

The first ice hockey games in Hanover were played by the DHC Hanover , which today only operates hockey , tennis and lacrosse . The first games against teams from Leipzig and Berlin are assured for 1911. A very small ice rink was available in Hanover with the so-called spittoon .

Hanover Indians

Main article: Hanover Indians

The Hanover Indians based in Kleefeld are the oldest and most traditional ice hockey club in the Lower Saxony state capital Hanover. The first forerunner of today's Indians was the ice hockey club in Hanover, which was founded in May 1948 by immigrants from Silesia and the Sudetenland (ESG) . The first game took place even before the foundation in January 1948 against the TC Grunewald-Berlin. Initially, a concrete surface behind the zoo was used as a training area, a usable ice surface was not yet available at the time.

In 1956, ESG merged with the Hanoverian Roll Sport Club (HRSC) to form the Roll- und Eissportgesellschaft Hanover (RESG) . However, some of roller sports turned because of too high hockey-heavy run new association, and in turn founded the mainly concentrating on Skates (u. A. Inline Skater Hockey ) ice and roller sports club Hannover (ERC) . In the summer of 1957, the RESG was given an area at the horse tower for the construction of an artificial ice rink, whereupon the ice rink at the horse tower was opened on November 7, 1959 and point games have been played since 1960.

On December 18, 1963, the club was renamed Eissport Club (EC) Hanover following a resolution at a general meeting . In 1984 this club went bankrupt, whereupon the Eissport Club (EC) was founded in Hanover . The EC in Hanover was a founding member of the German Ice Hockey League in 1994 and belonged to this league until 1996. After the EC went bankrupt in Hanover, there were initially two clubs that tried to succeed. One was the Kleefelder Eissportverein (KEV) , the other the Hannöversche Eissport-Club zu Kleefeld (HECK) . The KEV was given preference over the HECK, as most of the members had already converted to the KEV.

Since 2004, the professional team's gaming operations have been carried out by a gaming company called "EC Hannover Indians Eishockey-Spielbetriebs GmbH". The youth and women's teams are organized in the 2006 renamed EC Hannover Indians eV . The amateur teams were outsourced to the EC Pferdeturmtowers association in 2009 . In 2009 the Hanover Indians managed to qualify for the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga after a 3-0 final series against the Rote Teufel Bad Nauheim . In 2013 they went back to the ice hockey league after bankruptcy .

The origin of the Hannover Scorpions lies in the municipality of Wedemark in its district of Mellendorf . In 1973 an artificial ice rink was built here next to the outdoor pool , which initially did not correspond to the dimensions of an ice hockey surface. Nevertheless, the Ice Sports Club (ESC) Wedemark was founded in 1975 and, in addition to ice hockey, also offered ice stock sport , figure skating and ice dancing . A year later, the area was then adapted to international standards for an ice hockey rink, so that point games could be played on it for the first time. In the 1977/78 season , a men's team first took part in the game operations of the then fourth-highest league, the Regionalliga Nord , and won the championship in its first season. However, this success was not repeatable in the following years and one could only occupy middle and lower places. In the 1990/91 season, through the entry of the financier and later owner Jochen Haselbacher into the club's management, the club's first ascent to the league was achieved.

Already in the first league season you could secure your class retirement with fifth place and in the following season you just missed promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga . In 1994 the Canadian duo and later club idols Joe West and Len Soccio finally succeeded in advancing to the double-track 1st division as the foundation of the newly founded DEL . The club was then renamed ESC Wedemark Wildcats and surprisingly reached the promotion round as a climber with fourth place, but where they failed at Heilbronn EC . The championship then succeeded only a year later in the 1995/96 season , where you could finish both the preliminary and the championship round with first place.

Because the financially troubled EC Hannover waived its DEL license, the ESC Wedemark Wildcats were able to take their place in the DEL, which is otherwise a closed league, as champions of the first division. The team was outsourced from the club to a limited company and was renamed Wedemark Scorpions in their first DEL season . A year later, the team changed its name to Hannover Scorpions due to its proximity to the state capital. It succeeded the Hanover Scorpions, u. a. also through the many obligations of former NHL players to establish themselves in the top German division.

In 2006 the parent club ESC Wedemark was renamed ESC Hannover. In 2008 the former owner of the DEL Club Hannover Scorpions Jochen Haselbacher and the managing director of the DEL Club Marco Stichnoth founded the ESC Wedemark Scorpions. This acted as the parent club of the Hannover Scorpions after disputes between the DEL Club and the previous parent club ESC Hannover (formerly ESC Wedemark) had come. In 2010 the cooperation between the Hanover Scorpions and the ESC Wedemark Scorpions also ended, the new parent club became the SC Langenhagen.

The Scorpions' greatest success was winning the German Championship in the 2009/2010 season .

In 2013 the Scorpions sold their DEL license to Schwenningen . A new club under the same name has since played in the top ice hockey league .

From 2012, the ESC Wedemark Scorpions, which was founded as a parent club in 2008, provided its own men's team (from 2016 also a second men's team), which started in the Association League North. In 2014 they rose to the Oberliga Nord, where they met the new Hannover Scorpions, who competed in the Oberliga Nord with Langenhagen after the sale of the DEL license in 2013 . Finally, in 2017, the men's teams of the Hannover Scorpions and the ESC Wedemark Scorpions merged. Since then, the Hannover Scorpions, operated by Hannover Scorpions Eishockey GmbH , have been playing in Wedemark; the ESC Wedemark Scorpions acts as the parent club.

EC Wedemark

In the summer of 2005, the first team of ESC Wedemark was outsourced under the name Farmers , which was transferred to the independent club Ice Hockey Club Wedemark in June 2006 due to financial problems . After taking part in the Regionalliga North-East in 2005/06 , the team was withdrawn to the Association League North for the 2006/07 season. From the association league he was promoted to the Regionalliga North / East 2007/08 . In the summer of 2008, the team was withdrawn again in the Association League 2008/09. In the summer of 2009, the ice hockey club became the Eis Sport Club Wedemark , whose first team is nicknamed Scorpions . Its first team took over the right to play in the Regionalliga Nord . In 2010 the team was included in the Oberliga Nord , from which they had to relegate in the 2011/12 season . From 2012/2013 to 2015/16 the team played in a syndicate with SC Langenhagen under the name United North Stars in the Regionalliga Nord. From 2016/17 the team will play as Hannover Scorpions 1b.

SC Langenhagen

The ice hockey department was founded for the 2008/09 season [2] and operates under the name Langenhagen Jets. The team played the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons in the Regionalliga Nord and qualified for the Oberliga Nord after the restructuring of the third division. However, the Jets withdrew from play before the start of the 2010/11 season and did not play a single game in the major league. The 1b team in the Regionalliga Nord thus became the club's first team. In 2012 a syndicate was agreed with EC Wedemark and played from 2012/13 to 2015/16 under the name United North Stars and from 2016/17 as Hannover Scorpions 1b in the Regionalliga Nord. A 1b team plays in the Association League North. The women's team Lady Jets emerged from the change of the women's team of the ESC Hannover Scorpions, which played in the 1st women's league North in the 2008/09 season, to Langenhagen. [3] To this day, the club plays in the second highest women's ice hockey class, each with a team in the 1st women's division North [4] and the 2nd division North. [5]

The ice hockey teams play in the Lenny Soccio Ice & Event Center Arena in Langenhagen. The founder of the ice rink is Len Soccio, whose jersey hangs under the roof of the Hannover Scorpions. According to initial plans in August 2006, the sports facility was completed in autumn 2008. Despite an insolvency in the spring of 2009, the operating company went bankrupt, but was able to remain open with a new company under his participation.

EC Horse Tower Hunters

From the 2016/17 season, the EC Pferdeturm Hunters, a new club with teams, will be taking part in the game: The 1st team originally intended for the Regionalliga Nord was withdrawn from the game on October 1, 2016, so that the club with one team in the - sixth class - Landesliga Nord will take part in the game operations and another team in the hobby-organized ice hockey Hanover Hobby League (EHHL).

Women ice hockey

For the first time in the 1992/93 season, a women's ice hockey team took part in the game under the umbrella of the EC in Hanover , which took part in the women's ice hockey Bundesliga from the 1997/98 season . After the end of the game operation at the EC , the team continued the game operation in the women's ice hockey Bundesliga under the umbrella of KEV Hannover until the 2000/01 season. After the season, the team moved to the Hannoversche Ice Sports Club to Kleefeld (REAR) and took the name Seahawks at the woman hockey Bundesliga 2001/02 part.
