The 1997/98 women's ice hockey Bundesliga season was the 10th Bundesliga season for women in Germany. As in the previous season , the Pesky Kids of the ESG Esslingen were able to prevail in the final, this time against the Wild Cats of the Mannheim ERC and thus won the championship title for the fourth time in a row , making them once again women's ice hockey record champions.

organization

The league was carried out by the German Ice Hockey Federation .

mode

The preliminary round was carried out separately in the relays in a single round each against each with a return leg. The participants for the quarter-finals and the relegation were determined from those placed . The former continued to play for the championship, the latter for relegation.

Preliminary round

The top three teams of the two preliminary round groups competed in the following quarter-finals for the four semi-finals. The three last placed in the north group took part in relegation groups in which the places for the coming season were played out.

Relegation to the women's ice hockey Bundesliga 1998/99

The three last places in the two Bundesliga groups had to fight to stay in the relegation. The teams of the Northern group competed against the aspirants of promotion from TuS Wiehl and EV Duisburg (who took the place of the renouncing GSC Moers ) from the North Rhine-Westphalia League and the Frankfurt ESC as winners of the Hessen League. The Stuttgart EC as champions of the Baden-Wuerttemberg League and EHC Memmingen competed against the teams in the South Group, which prevailed against the Munich / Planegg syndicate in a playoff between the two group winners of the Bayern League.

In contrast to previous years, in which a quarter-finals were played in the mode of a home and return match, the top three of the preliminary round groups competed against each other in the final round for four places in the final tournament.

Final tournament

The final tournament took place at the end of February / beginning of March 1998 with the same teams as in the previous year. The tournament was the prelude to a series of events on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Mannheim ERC in Mannheim.
