The women's ice hockey Bundesliga season 1996/97 was the 9th Bundesliga season for women in Germany. As in the previous season , the Pesky Kids of ESG Esslingen prevailed against TuS Wiehl in the final and won the German champions , making them the reigning women's ice hockey record champions.

The league was carried out by the German Ice Hockey Federation .
mode
The preliminary round was carried out separately in the relays in a single round each against each with a return leg. The participants for the quarter-finals and the qualifying round were determined from those placed . The former continued to play for the championship, the latter for relegation.
Preliminary round
The four first-placed teams of the two preliminary round groups competed in the following quarter-finals for the four semi-finals. The four last placed in the group north took part in three qualification groups in which the places for the coming season were played out.

Relegation to the women's ice hockey Bundesliga 1997/98
In the relegation round, the teams in positions five to eight of the preliminary group north met the teams of the EHC Solingen and the Herner EV from the Regionalliga NRW, the EC Hannover from the Regionalliga Nord-Ost and the VERC Lauterbach from the Regionalliga Hessen about staying up or about promotion. In the southern group there was the direct climber Augsburger EV , who prevailed unbeaten in the Bayernliga and the qualifying group.

Final tournament
In the quarter-finals, the four winners of the preliminary round group north crossed against those of the group south. The four winners reached the semi-finals . In the end, the favored teams in places 1 and 2 of the two preliminary round groups prevailed.

In the decisive game there was an unusually clear success for the Esslingen team, who won the title for the third time in a row. Maren Valenti scored ten points scorer (one goal, nine assists) and Sandra Kürten scored four goals.
