The EC Bergkamener Bären are a German women's ice hockey club from Bergkamen in North Rhine-Westphalia . The club's first team plays in the Bundesliga and reached the German championship for the first time in the 2004/05 season , having won the runner-up in the 1983/84 and 1985/86 seasons . In the seasons 2005/06 and 2006/07 the EC Bergkamen became DEB cup winner .

history

After the club was founded in 1982, a women's team was formed for the first time in 1983, and after the transfer of female players from ERC Westfalen Dortmund in the 1983/84 season, it took part in the NRW League for the first time. The bears were able to qualify for the final round of the German championship straight away , where they achieved the runner-up title. Until 1988 , the team took part in the finals without interruption, 1986 winning the runner-up could be repeated. From the 1988/89 season, the team took part in the newly founded women's ice hockey Bundesliga , in which it reached the final tournament in 1994 without interruption.

In the 1997/98 season, the Bergkamener Bären were relegated from the Bundesliga, but were already promoted from the NRW League the following year. In the 1999/00 season they did not succeed in staying up in the league, but with the dissolution of the TuS Wiehl women's team , the EC Bergkamen could continue to participate in the women's ice hockey Bundesliga. Under long-time coach Dirk Wefringhaus, the team managed to qualify for the final four tournament for the German championship for the first time in the 2000/01 season , which was only just missed in the two following seasons. In the 2003/04 season they again took part in the Final Four tournament before the team won the German championship for the first time in the 2004/05 season . In 2006 and 2007 , the bears also won the German ice hockey cup .

From the 2001/02 season, a second team also took part in the game operations in the Landesliga NRW. This moved in 2007 to the association league of North Rhine-Westphalia and will take part in the 2nd North Women's League from the 2008/09 season.
