Career
As a player
West began his career in 1984 at Northern Michigan University , where he American US for the local hockey team in the College Football Central Collegiate Hockey Association played. There the striker was one of the team's best scorers and was able to score 114 times in a total of 79 games . In 1986 he left the university and moved to the International Hockey League for the Indianapolis Checkers . After further career stations with the Winston-Salem Thunderbirds from the East Coast Hockey League and the Thunder Bay Thunder Hawks from the IHL, he forced a move to Europe in the summer of 1992.
There those responsible for the then top division club ESC Wedemark became aware of him and transferred him to Germany. At the ESC, West performed well and was the club's best scorer from the north of Hanover in his first season. He scored 167 points in 52 games and also received 150 penalty minutes. After another season in the big leagues, he moved to season 1994/95 for Heilbronner EC , which then, as the ESC Wedemark to the restructuring of the leagues with the introduction of DEL was active in the first league.
West stayed in Heilbronn only for one season and then returned to Wedemark in 1995, where he was able to build on his old achievements and scored 142 points in 53 league games. He had a large share in the promotion to the German ice hockey league at the end of the season . When the Wedemark Scorpions moved to Hanover in the summer of 1997 and consequently called themselves the Hanover Scorpions, West remained loyal to the club. In the 1997/98 season the winger became the top scorer in the German Ice Hockey League with 50 points. He played with the Scorpions until 2001 and moved to the third-class league for ETC Timmendorfer Strand during the 2000/01 season . There he finally ended his active ice hockey career in 2001.
West's jersey number 10 was "blocked" by those in charge of the Hannover Scorpions because of his services to the club and is no longer given to active Scorpions players. For this reason, a banner with his name and jersey number hung under the roof of the TUI Arena , the former home ground of the Hanoverians.
As a trainer
After the end of his ice hockey career, West worked as an assistant coach at SC Bietigheim-Bissingen from the 2nd Bundesliga and as head coach at ESV Bayreuth and the Hanover Indians in the major league. With the Indians, whom he looked after between November 2006 and April 2009, he rose to the 2nd Bundesliga at the end of the 2008/09 season . He then decided against another engagement with the Indians and returned to his Canadian homeland for family reasons.
On October 5, 2009, Joe West returned to Hanover to take over as the successor to Craig Streu of the Hanover Indians team, which was not very successful in the 2nd Bundesliga. After the season and successful relegation, he went back to his native Canada. For the 2012/2013 season he took over the position of head coach at HC Neumarkt Wild Goose from the A2 series . This engagement ended on January 29, 2013 by mutual agreement and Joe West returned to Canada.
