Ice hockey has been played in Timmendorfer Strand since 1985. The most successful time of Timmendorfer ice hockey was the 1990s, when the then ice sports and tennis club Timmendorfer Strand played in the second highest division, the first division at that time. The club for ice sports in Timmendorf eV, which was newly founded in 2018, was able to win all league games in its first season and be promoted to the Association League North. In the 2019/20 season, the first team also won all their matches in this league and was thus able to secure the championship title in the Ice Hockey Association League North.

history

ETC Timmendorfer Strand

The Timmendorfer Strand ice sports and tennis club was founded in 1985. The professional game operation began first in the Landesliga Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein, which was followed by a second place, the immediate promotion to the Regionalliga-Nord. In the following season , the team was runner-up straight away and secured promotion to the Oberliga Nord . In the same year, the youth department was founded with initially six children, which increased to 25 in the next year. The first team was able to secure relegation in their debut season in the league by finishing second in the qualifying round; the following year the ETC took part in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga . The 1991/92 season was the most successful of the young club to date, when the league championship was brought in against TuS Geretsried . A rise was not possible due to the restructuring of the leagues in the following year. In 1993 the club also took part in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga, but missed the athletic qualification there. After the runner-up in 1994 and the subsequent entry into the playoff final, the Timmendorfer were theoretically allowed to compete in the German ice hockey league , but renounced the promotion due to the insufficient spectator capacity of the ice rink. More years followed in the 1st League North, before the ice sports and tennis club Timmendorfer Strand had to file for bankruptcy after the departure of the main sponsor Hawesta after the 1996/97 season .

EC Timmendorfer Strand

After the founding of the ice hockey club Timmendorfer Strand on June 16, 1997, the team was allowed to compete in the Regionalliga Nord in the following season, in which they were immediately promoted to the 1st Northern League. This league got its old name Oberliga Nord again at the end of the 1998/99 season . In the following two years, the first men's team played in the league until its self-dissolution in summer 2001, as a result of which the ECT was incorporated into the regional league . There the team played until the 2005/06 season before they had to file for bankruptcy again.

Shortly before the bankruptcy petition for the ECT , the EHC Timmendorfer Strand 06 was founded in July 2006 , under whose roof the gaming operations of the amateur, women and youngsters of the ECT continued. The team started in the association league north-east and was able to secure the league and the title of association league champion there with a strongly rejuvenated team consisting of local players. After the renewed promotion to the regional league, the qualification for the championship round was made there. The 2008/09 season closed the team in second place after the preliminary round and the runner-up title after the championship round. During the season, the club received nationwide attention in the mass media through the signing of goalkeeper Wyatt Russell , son of actors Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell . In the Regionalliga season 2009/10 the Beach Boys reached the 3rd place after the preliminary round as well as in the championship round. In the 2010/11 season they started in the new Oberliga Nord and after two runner-up championships in 2011 and 2012 they won the championship title of the Oberliga Nord in the 2012/2013 season. In the significantly stronger Oberliga Nord 2013/14 (with the Hanover Scorpions and the Hanover Indians) they became runner-up again.

After the end of the 2017/18 season, EHCT board members resigned. A short time later, massive financial problems of the club became apparent. The club planned to withdraw from the Oberliga to the Regionalliga Nord. Finally, the EHCT went bankrupt in August 2018.

CE Timmendorfer Strand

The first team of the newly founded CET 2018/19

As a result of the insolvent EHCT 06, the CE Timmendorfer Strand was founded. The ice sports club in Timmendorf (CET) starts the 2018/19 premiere season with a senior team in the Landesliga Nord. There the team won the championship title of the Landesliga Nord and secured promotion to the Verbandsliga Nord. In the 2019/20 season, the team from the Baltic Sea also won all of its league games in the Verbandsliga Nord and was able to secure the second championship title in a row without losing points.

Women ice hockey

For the first time under the umbrella of the ECT in the 1993/94 season a women's team took part in the game operation, which played in the second-rate 2nd division North in the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons. After the end of the ECT , the team continued playing under the umbrella of EHCT06 in the 2006/07 season in the lowest division and took part in the third-class 1st women's division North in the 2009/10 season.

Since the 2017/18 season, the women's teams from Timmendorf and Hamburg were merged and a game community was founded.

Significant former players

Many well-known players have played for ETC Timmendorfer Strand, EC Timmendorfer Strand and EHCT06, including Mark MacKay , the ex-captain of the German national team, and Jeff Tomlinson , the former coach of the DEG Metro Stars and the Nürnberg Ice Tigers in the DEL. Ģirts Ankipāns , current Latvian national player and Olympic participant, as well as Joe West , top scorer of the DEL 1997/1998, played successfully in Timmendorfer teams, as did the German national striker Tomáš Martinec as well as Kerry Goulet , Henry Thom and Marvin Glaser .

In 1999, an exclamation point of solidarity was set by bringing on the Canadian deaf international John Guirestante , who, however, died in 2001 at the age of only 26. In addition, Sven Rampf and Mario Gehrig were successful DEL players in the Timmendorfer squad. For the first men’s team, well-known coaches across Germany worked with Greg Poss and Tom Pokel.

Youth work

Young player of the EHCT06

Youth teams have been participating in games since the 1989/90 season. The boys' team was North German champions, school and youth teams were North German runners-up. The youth work of EHC Timmendorfer Strand 06 and its predecessor clubs is extremely successful and in recent years has repeatedly produced players who were able to assert themselves in the men's area in higher leagues. Examples of this are the brothers Thorben and Patrick Saggau .

Venue

The venue for the Timmendorfer ice sports clubs is the Timmendorfer Strand ice sports and tennis center with a capacity of 1,900 spectators. It is the property of the municipality of Timmendorfer Strand and this wanted to cease operations at the end of the lease, which ran until the end of April 2005. With the help of its supporters, the club at that time fought for the preservation of the ice rink from summer 2004, which is particularly important for youth and popular sports. From this a referendum developed and on November 28, 2004 a referendum was made, which was won with a large majority. This secured the hall and the club. The municipality and the association agreed on a lease for five years plus an option for a further five years. In the spring of 2006 a Spielbetriebs GmbH was founded, to which the first senior team was outsourced.

In January 2017 there was another referendum, in which the citizens of the municipality of Timmendorfer Strand decided on the restoration of the ice rink. The volume of the renovation should be around 10 million euros. Over 82% of the residents voted to keep the ice rink and the renovation work should be completed between 2018 and 2021.

In September 2018, the Timmendorfer Strand municipal council submitted an application to carry out another referendum in the coming year. As the costs for a complete renovation of the existing building are too high for the community, the mayor was commissioned with an expression of interest procedure. He should now use the coming months to find a potential investor who is interested in building a new ice rink and tennis center on Timmendorfer Strand. At the beginning of next year, according to the current plan, the citizens should vote in a new decision on whether a new hall should be built (by an investor) or whether the municipality should renovate the current hall.
