Tomlinson began his career in 1987 in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League with the Prince Albert Raiders , where he was able to improve continuously and was one of the strikers with the highest points in his second year . He scored 42 scorer points in 55 games that he played. At the IceCaps he was one of the top performers and scored 76 points in 66 games.
During the 1992/93 season, those in charge of ETC Timmendorfer Strand were able to convince him of a commitment in Germany and transferred him to the Oberliga Nord . After a short interlude in the German ice hockey league with the Berlin Capitals , which lasted only a few months, he decided in 1997 to move to the highest British league, the Ice Hockey Superleague , where he was now on the ice for the Manchester Storm club went. With his new employer he took part in the European Hockey League .
Due to the good performance that he showed, some clubs from other and especially stronger European leagues became aware of the left-shooter. From the 2004/05 season Tomlinson worked as a trainer for the Eisbären Juniors Berlin , with whom he was able to secure relegation twice in the league. He later took over the post of assistant coach of the Eisbären Berlin in the German Ice Hockey League, where he held this position until the 2009/10 season .
From the 2010/11 season Tomlinson worked as head coach for the DEG Metro Stars . After a weak start with six defeats from the first ten games, his team stabilized in October and at the end of 2010 was the best team in the entire DEL with 17: 3 wins. The team was able to work its way up from the penultimate place in the table to the top of the table. During a losing streak of six games in a row, DEG managing director Lance Nethery extended Tomlinson's contract for another season in order to express his confidence in him. The team later won nine of the last thirteen games of the season, securing second place in the table after the main round. Tomlinson's team won the playoff series against Adler Mannheim 3-1 and qualified for the semi-finals, which were lost in five games of the best-of-five series against the eventual champions Eisbären Berlin. For the 2012/13 season Tomlinson left DEG to act as the new head coach of the Nürnberg Ice Tigers . In December 2012 he was dismissed due to an ongoing series of defeats and replaced by Bengt-Åke Gustafsson .
On July 4th, 2013 the Eisbären Berlin hired Tomlinson as their new head coach. At the Germany Cup in November 2014, he was the head coach of the Canadian national team. On December 16, 2014, Tomlinson's contract with the Berliners was terminated. At the beginning of June 2015, the Swiss B division team Rapperswil-Jona Lakers announced that Tomlinson was signed as the new coach. He signed a contract for one season, which was extended prematurely in November 2015 for two more years until the end of the 2017/18 season. In the 2015/16 season Tomlinson led the Lakers to the NLB runner-up. Also in 2016/17 they made it into the final series of the NLB, but again the championship title was missed (3: 4 wins against Langenthal).
In the 2017/18 season, Tomlinson Rapperswil won the championship title in the second Swiss league (now called the Swiss League) and thus made it into the relegation round against Kloten. There his team prevailed, Tomlinson consequently rose to the National League with Rapperswil. In the 2018/19 season he had to go with the team in the relegation round of the first Swiss league. Before the crucial games against Davos began, his contract was extended to 2020.
