Kevin Clark (born December 29, 1987 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers in the National League since January 2019 .
Career
Kevin Clark started his career with the Winnipeg South Blues in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League , the highest youth league in his home province . Here he played with the future NHL professional Ryan Garbutt in a team. Despite many goals and assists, Clark was best known for his aggressive style of play, which is 250 penalty minutes in his final season for the South Blues . After three years, the Canadian left his hometown and played for the University of Alaska Anchorage in the WCHA , a division of the NCAA . In his second and third seasons for the Seawolves - the college's ice hockey team - he was the second best scorer on his team. Clark went into his senior year as one of the top performers . As assistant captain, the right-handed shooter was by far the best goalscorer and scorer of his team.
Through these achievements, the Manitoba Moose became aware of him. After the end of the WCHA season, the Canadians from the American Hockey League signed the Manitoban for the last nine games of the season and the subsequent play-offs. With these he was able to convince and was accordingly equipped with a contract for the following season, it was the first professional playing time for the then 22-year-old. Due to the change of location of the Atlanta Thrashers in the NHL to Winnipeg , the home of the Moose , the AHL team was dissolved. The successor team, the St. John's IceCaps, were convinced of Clark's achievements and consequently signed him. In the games for the team from Newfoundland , the striker shone especially as a good superior player.
During another season at the IceCaps , the Canadian decided to leave North America to sign a contract with the Krefeld Penguins from the German Ice Hockey League . He played his first game for the Penguins on February 15, 2013 in a 4-3 home win against Adler Mannheim . Clark scored the first goal on the penultimate matchday in a 3-2 away win after penalty shoot-out at the Hamburg Freezers . He marked the decisive hit in the shootout . After further convincing appearances in the play-offs, his contract was extended for another year. In the 2013/14 season , the winger, along with Adam Courchaine and Daniel Pietta, formed one of the most successful attacking formations in the league. He finished the season with a total of 68 scorer points and had the best value in the league with plus / minus statistics of +25.
For the 2014/15 season , the attacker switched to league rivals Hamburg Freezers and signed a two-year contract there. At the Hanseatic League, he was able to build on the offensive performance of the previous year, in the 8-1 win against the Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers in October 2014, Clark scored four goals within 22 minutes, something that no Freezers player had achieved in the history of the club . Furthermore, the Canadian also set a new club record with 32 goals this season, landed in second place within the league with a total of 66 scorer points and had the best plus / minus statistics for the second time in a row. His achievements, some of which were outstanding, were honored after the main round with the award for striker and player of the year in the DEL.
In May 2015, his contract in Hamburg, which was still valid for one year, was terminated after Clark expressed a request to switch. He joined the SCL Tigers from the Swiss National League A , where former Freezers coach Benoit Laporte had taken over the position of head coach . Clark scored 18 goals and 19 assists in 42 games of the NLA main round. There were also three hits and eleven assists in twelve relegation games. He was the top scorer in his team in the 2015/16 season.
In June 2016, Clark was signed by the Swedish first division club Brynäs IF and was one of the top performers there for the following two game years. With 23 goals he was Svenska Hockeyligan's top scorer in the 2016/17 season and reached the runner-up with Brynäs.
In June 2018, Clark was signed by Dinamo Riga from the Continental Hockey League . With the Latvians, however, the Canadian only played until January 2019, before he moved to Switzerland to the SCRJ Lakers and received a contract there until 2021.
Style of play
Clark is described as a player who can make the difference without scoring offensively. Despite his small size, he is not physically inferior and does not shy away from duels. Furthermore, the attacker repeatedly provokes penalty times for his opponents through his behavior. Also to be emphasized are his speed and stick technique. Rick Adduono , the trainer of the Krefeld Pinguine, said: “I spoke to many of Kevin's former companions and everyone was full of praise for his work ethic and skills. It's great that we have the opportunity to strengthen our team again in this way. ”
The bustling winger is often compared to the former player of the Krefeld Penguins, Greg Evtushevski .
