The Kalmyk State University ( Kalmyk Хальмг улсин ик сурһуль; Russian Калмыцкий государственный университет ) in Elista is the oldest and largest university in the republic of southern Kalmykia and one of the largest universities in the Republic of Kalmykia .

There are 7 faculties and an institute for Kalmyk Philology and Oriental Studies. The university offers 22 courses leading to the state examination and technical diploma (specialty), 20 courses leading to a bachelor's and master's degree and 18 courses of intermediate vocational training.

Face-to-face and distance learning are offered.

The university plays a key role in the system of education, further training and retraining of specialists for various areas of life in the Republic of Kalmykia.

There are 7 buildings in Elista, and over one in Baschanta (college). In 2000 KalmGU was awarded the certificate of honor of the President of the Republic of Kalmykia in connection with the 30th anniversary of the university, and in 2002 the Russian-Swiss Business Club awarded it with the gold medal for its impeccable business reputation.

The idea of ​​opening a university in the Republic of Kalmykia came up as early as the 1920s, but could only be realized after the restoration of the Kalmyk ASSR. It finally opened in 1970. Today the university offers 8 departments and 26 courses of study, with 6,800 students studying here.

The university was formed in 1970. 1975 was the first class of graduates. In 1991 the center for postgraduate training for specialists in economics and aspirations was founded.

International cooperation

International scientific projects and cooperation programs are maintained and there are links to universities in Asia , Europe and America . KalmGU is the organizer and an active member of the International Association of State Universities of the Caspian Countries, which unites 46 universities and research institutions in Russia , Kazakhstan , Azerbaijan , Turkmenistan and Iran . In 2011–2012, 73 foreign students from Benin , Iraq , the People's Republic of China , Congo , Mali , Chad and Kyrgyzstan studied at the university . 28 - at state expense, 27 - at your own expense and 18 - as a trainee. From 2012–2013, 146 foreign students, trainees and doctoral students from 18 countries study at the KalmGU: Benin, Congo, Mali, Ghana , China, Mongolia , Kazakhstan, Georgia , Azerbaijan, Tajikistan , Kyrgyzstan , Turkmenistan, Iraq, Sri Lanka , Vietnam , Germany , Lithuania and the United States.

Russian as a foreign language

The Kalmyk State University not only has many years of positive experience in pre-university education for foreign students, but also has good potential for further development of such activities. In this context, the Chair for Russian as a Foreign Language and for Humanities Disciplines (RKIOD) was founded in 2012.

The RKIOD chair offers the Russian as a Foreign Language course on three levels: pre-university studies, direct studies, postgraduate studies. The following programs of the chair are available to students:

  • Russian as a Foreign Language I program certified;
  • Advanced Semester Program (for Mongolian State University students);
  • 10-month advanced program (for Inner Mongolia University, China students).

In 2012 the program “Russian language business course for beginners and advanced learners” was developed.

The Faculty for Pre-University and Foreign Nationals Education currently offers various forms:

  • Preparatory college for foreigners;
  • Russian as a Foreign Language;
  • one-year study visit in Russian (for students from Inner Mongolia University, China);
  • one-year study visits for masters and doctoral students;
  • Training of foreigners for the naturalization test;
  • Summer language school;
  • Business courses Russian as a foreign language

The faculty has a good material base: a library, multimedia equipment, two computer rooms, audio, TV and video technology, and teaching computer programs. The faculty is developing dynamically, continuously perfecting the system of academic, extracurricular and educational work with students: controls the fulfillment of study plans, develops and changes educational work plans with consideration for newly arrived applicants. In 2012, a mentoring system for effective work with foreign students was introduced. All of this helps foreign students adapt more quickly to new living conditions. This system helps to develop their linguistic, communicative and multicultural skills.
