The Helios Arena , originally and in parlance also Eisstadion am Bauchenberg , also Bauchenbergstadion or simply Bauchenberg , is an ice skating center in the town of Villingen-Schwenningen . It consists of a stadium for ice hockey games, a second ice rink, a curling rink and the “Eisbär” restaurant. The stadium is owned by the city and is managed by the Villingen-Schwenningen GmbH artificial ice rink. The stadium is mainly used by the Schwenninger Eis- und Rollsportclub 04 eV and the Schwenninger Wild Wings professional club.

description

The capacity of the Bauchenberg was 5200 seats up to the summer of 2007, of which 875 were seated and 4325 were standing. After completion of the expansion, the capacity was officially 6,214 seats, for concerts with indoor seating up to 8,000. After the Schwenninger Wild Wings rose to the German Ice Hockey League in 2013, the maximum capacity for ice hockey games fell to 6,193 viewers due to conversion measures for TV production . The previous visitor record for an ice hockey game is 6,273 spectators and was set up on April 19, 2011 at the second game of the Wild Wings playoff final against the Ravensburg Towerstars .

use

The arena is the home venue for the teams of the Schwenninger Eis- und Rollsportclub 04 eV and the professional ice hockey team Schwenninger Wild Wings . In addition to ice hockey, figure skating and curling are also practiced in Bauchenberg .

In addition to the stadium for professional hockey, the ice rink on Bauchenberg also houses a second ice rink, which is available to the public as well as the youth and amateur teams for training. The second ice rink is open daily for ice skating . There is an ice cream disco once a month .

The DEL boys' tournament with 20 teams, 400 players and up to 2,000 spectators has been taking place in Bauchenberg for over 20 years. The tournament is considered an "unofficial" German championship in this age group.

The program of ice musicals and shows includes The Snow Queen , Mary Poppins , The Lion King , Cinderella , Moscow Circus on Ice as well as a Christmas and New Year's show run.

During the final round of the Ringer Bundesliga 2013/2014 three fights of the ASV Nendingen took place in the arena. On February 15, 2014, ASV won the German wrestling team championship here.

Structural development until 2007

A special feature of the structural development of the Bauchenberg is that a stadium was built here around an ice surface. This existed since 1968 and was built on a level surface, with the spectators standing directly on the ice surface. In 1976 the ice rink was roofed over and a grandstand was built on the north side. From 1979 to 1981 a large earth wall was installed in the south as well as concrete steps for the standing grandstand and the west gable wall. In 1988/89 the cabin wing and the south and east grandstands with access were built. The hall was thus closed on three sides. From 1991 to 2001, the restaurant, entrance area and cabins were added and the grandstands were installed. The roof was also renovated, with a second roof covering being applied to the existing one. In 2006 this roof structure received its last special permit.

Renovation from 2007 to 2010

Arena entrance area (2016)

On November 21, 2007, the city council of Villingen-Schwenningen decided to expand the stadium for 10.5 million euros. The most important reason was the imperative to renovate the dilapidated roof and the non-compliance with fire protection and assembly regulations . The renovation was carried out in three steps, each during the summer break, so as not to endanger the game.

Summer 2007

New sanitary facilities were built, a fire protection wall was installed between the two ice surfaces and new supports for the roof. In addition, preparations for the construction of the upper tier were made behind the standing straight. The old wooden seats were removed from the seats and replaced with modern metal folding chairs. The capacity fell to 5,000 places.

Summer 2008

The old roof was dismantled, a new upper tier was drawn in and then a new roof was installed, which now consists of steel girders instead of wood. In addition, the structural work for possible VIP boxes was carried out, new catering and sales stands were created in the interior and a new display cube was installed. The upper tier was not yet seated for the 2008/09 season and could not yet be used. The glazing and thus the closure of the outer front was not yet completed. The capacity was 5,265 places.

Summer 2009

In the summer of 2009, the stadium was completely closed, the upper tier seating and the VIP boxes were completely expanded.

Renovation 2020

At a public dialogue in February 2020, the renovation plans were presented by managing director Christoph Sandner and architect Uwe Schlenker. These provide for a reduction in standing room in favor of seats. In the upper tier, the two outermost seating blocks will be converted into a new lounge. The capacity is to be reduced from 6215 spectators to 5200. In future there will be 2,713 seats (currently 1,552), standing room around 2,500 (currently 4,673). Construction should begin after the last junior game, i.e. around Easter 2020, and be completed by the new season. The renovation of the lighting and the video cube will be postponed to 2021. The width of the ice rink will be reduced so that the Helios Arena will be the first ice rink in Germany with an ice rink in NHL dimensions (26 m × 56 m).
