Allen Bentley "Al" Pedersen (born January 13, 1965 in Fort Saskatchewan , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach , who played 492 games for the Boston Bruins , Minnesota North Stars and in the course of his playing career between 1982 and 1995 Hartford Whalers has played in the National Hockey League (NHL) on the position of defender . After the end of his career, he worked as a coach in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) and West Coast Hockey League (WCHL).

Career

Pedersen spent his junior years between 1982 and 1985 with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League (WHL). The defender played a total of 208 games for the team during this period and scored 48 times. He completed his best year in the 1984/85 season when he collected 22 points and almost doubled the previous record from his rookie season . Already after that rookie year he was selected in the fifth round of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft in 102nd place by the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League (NHL).

For the 1985/86 season , the Bruins finally brought the defender into the professional field and used him throughout the season with their farm team , the Moncton Golden Flames , in the American Hockey League (AHL). From the following game year Pedersen was part of the regular staff of the Boston NHL squad and formed a defender pair with Ray Bourque . Pedersen stayed with the team until the summer of 1991. During this time he reached the final series for the Stanley Cup twice with the Bruins in 1988 and 1990 , but both were lost. By selection in the 1991 NHL Expansion Draft , in which he was left unprotected by the Bruins, the Canadian ended up with the Minnesota North Stars in May 1991 . The now 26-year-old didn't feel at home there and only played 29 games for Minnesota during the 1991/92 season due to a serious muscle injury and back problems. Immediately after the end of the season, he was therefore given in exchange for a six- round vote in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft to the Hartford Whalers . There Pedersen was initially used more regularly, but in the course of the second year he ended up in the AHL with the Springfield Indians farm team .

For the 1994/95 season , Pedersen finally left the NHL and hired as a playing assistant coach for the Atlanta Knights from the International Hockey League (IHL), who were reigning Turner Cup winners at that time . After the season he ended his active career at the age of 30, in which he had played 492 games in the NHL. However, he stayed for another year as an assistant coach in Atlanta. After the franchise dissolved in the summer of 1996, he immediately found a new employer in the Pensacola Ice Pilots from the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). For the following four years he was the head coach of the team. His greatest success was reaching the final series of the Kelly Cup in the 1997/98 season , which was lost in six games against the Hampton Roads Admirals . For the 2000/01 season he moved to league rivals Mississippi Sea Wolves for one season . He then worked as the head coach of the Colorado Gold Kings in the West Coast Hockey League (WCHL), where he surprisingly had to abandon his tents again in August 2002 due to the team dissolution, although he had only been appointed general manager of the franchise three months earlier had been. Pedersen then stayed in the US state of Colorado and worked as a coach in the Southern Colorado Amateur Hockey Association .
