Edward Emmett Courtenay (born February 2, 1968 in Verdun , Québec ) is a retired Canadian - British ice hockey player and coach . Most recently he played with the Manchester Phoenix in the British English Premier Ice Hockey League . In the National Hockey League he was active for the San Jose Sharks .
Career
Courtenay first played four years in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Laval Titan and Granby Bisons . In his last season, his 114 points in 68 games were decisive for the Walh in the Second All-Star team of the league. Despite his good performances, the right winger remained undrafted .
For the season 1988/89 Courtenay switched to the professional camp and played the following three years with the Kalamazoo Wings in the International Hockey League , the farm team of the Minnesota North Stars from the NHL . The leap to a NHL roster of Canadians managed only to 1991/92 as him, the newly established San Jose Sharks in NHL Dispersal Draft in 1991 , which divided the players between the North Stars and the Sharks, selected. In the seasons 1991/92 and 1992/93 he played 44 NHL games and scored 20 points. He also won in the 1991/92 season with the Kansas City Blades , the Sharks farm team, the Turner Cup , the championship of the IHL.
After Courtenay was used exclusively in the IHL in the 1993/94 season, he subsequently only played in the North American minor leagues before moving to Europe in the British Ice Hockey Superleague in the summer of 1997 , where he worked up made a name for the end of the 2001/02 season with the Sheffield Steelers and Ayr Scottish Eagles and was one of the best players on the island. From 2002 to 2005 Courtenay returned to North America and was there in the Quebec Semi-Pro Hockey League and ECHL on the ice. From the 2005/06 season to the end of the 2007/08 season he was player-coach of the Belfast Giants , which belong to the British Elite Ice Hockey League . This was followed by one-year engagements with the Newcastle Vipers and Manchester Phoenix , with Courtenay also serving as an assistant coach in Manchester in the 2009/10 season. He then ended his active career.
