Robert Paul "Bob" McGill (born April 27, 1962 in Leduc , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , coach and scout , who played 755 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs , Chicago , in the course of his active career between 1979 and 1996 Blackhawks , San Jose Sharks , Detroit Red Wings , New York Islanders and Hartford Whalers in the National Hockey League on the position of defender .

Career

McGill initially played two years from 1979 to 1981 with the Victoria Cougars in the Western Hockey League . With these he won the President's Cup , the championship trophy of the WHL, at the end of the 1980/81 season , and then took part with the team in the Memorial Cup . The defender scored well in both WHL years, but was also in the penalty box well over 200 minutes in both seasons.

After the Canadians in the NHL Entry Draft in 1980 in the second round at the 26th position from the Toronto Maple Leafs had been chosen, he took them to the 1981-82 season under contract. There he spent his entire rookie season before he played the following two seasons both on the farm team in the American Hockey League and on the NHL team. For the 1984/85 season McGill made the leap into the regular roster of the Maple Leafs. In the summer of 1987, Toronto gave the defender in a five-player transfer business to the Chicago Blackhawks , where McGill spent the seasons from 1987 to 1991 and completed his best NHL season in the 1989/90 season with twelve points from 69 games. After he went unprotected in the 1991 NHL Expansion Draft , he played in the 1991/92 season for the San Jose Sharks , for whose roster the Expansion Draft had been held. After nine months, in March 1992, the Sharks transferred McGill for the Swede Johan Garpenlöv to the Detroit Red Wings , where he spent the rest of the season, before moving to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the summer of 1992 and back to the a few weeks later Toronto Maple Leafs went. For this, however, he played only a few games, as well as for the New York Islanders and Hartford Whalers , to which he had switched in the following years. He ended his NHL career before the 1994–95 season . The last games he played for the Chicago Wolves from the International Hockey League in 1995/96.

After his playing career, McGill worked as a coach for some time. From 1996 to 1998 he filled the job of assistant coach with the Hershey Bears from the American Hockey League. For the 1998/99 season he took over the post of head coach for the Baton Rouge Kingfish from the East Coast Hockey League for two years . His last coaching position was the Oshawa Generals from the Ontario Hockey League in the 2004/05 season. Between 2008 and 2016 he was a Scout for the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Hockey League .
