Donald Frederick "Don" Barber (born December 2, 1964 in Victoria , British Columbia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played 126 games for the Minnesota North Stars , Winnipeg Jets , Nordiques de Québec between 1981 and 1993 and San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League on the position of right winger . His son Riley is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Barber first played from 1981 to 1983 in the British Columbia Hockey League with the Kelowna Buckaroos and from 1983 to 1984 for the St. Albert Saints in the Alberta Junior Hockey League . He then moved to college , where he played for Bowling Green State University from 1984 to 1988 . The right winger had already been selected in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers in the sixth round in 120th position, but before he ever played a game for them, they gave up his transfer rights in December 1985 to the Minnesota North Stars .
The North Stars signed the Canadian before the 1988/89 season and used him at the beginning of the International Hockey League with the Kalamazoo Wings . During the season he also played his first games in the NHL for Minnesota. He also spent the following season in both the NHL and the IHL. Shortly after the beginning of the 1990/91 season, the North Stars Barber transferred to the Winnipeg Jets , where he stayed for the rest of the season. This also let him play mainly with their farm team in the American Hockey League . In the 1991/92 season , Barber managed to play the feat for three different NHL franchises . After saving the season with the Winnipeg Jets, as in previous years, they put him on the waiver list in November 1991 . From there he took the Nordiques de Québec under contract. For the Nordiques, however, he ran only twice in the NHL before they handed him over to the San Jose Sharks in March 1992 . This pushed him back into the minor league in the 1992/93 season , whereupon Barber ended his career after a few games.
