Garnet Edward "Ace" Bailey (born June 13, 1948 in Lloydminster , Saskatchewan , † September 11, 2001 in New York City , New York , USA ) was a Canadian ice hockey player , coach and scout , who in his playing days from 1966 until 1981 played for the Boston Bruins , Detroit Red Wings , St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League and the Edmonton Oilers in the World Hockey Association .

Career

Garnet Bailey began his career as a hockey player with the junior team of the Edmonton Oil Kings , for which he was active from 1964 to 1967 and won the 1966 Memorial Cup . During his time with the Oil Kings, he was selected in the third round of the 1966 NHL Amateur Draft as the 13th player of the Boston Bruins . First, however, the attacker ran in the 1967/68 season in the Central Hockey League for the Oklahoma City Blazers , before he made his debut for the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League in the following season . In his rookie year , he scored three goals and provided three assists in nine games. The rest of the season he spent with their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Hershey Bears . In the following years, the left shooter worked out a regular place with the Bruins, with whom he won the prestigious Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972 .

On March 1, 1973, Bailey was given in exchange for Gary Doak to the Detroit Red Wings , for which he was also active for a year in the NHL across seasons, as then for the St. Louis Blues . Until 1978, the winger was under contract with the Washington Capitals for three years . This was followed by a year each with the Edmonton Oilers from the World Hockey Association and the Houston Apollos and Wichita Wind from the Central Hockey League, where he was head coach in Wichita in the 1980/81 season and only went on the ice once .

Following the end of his career as a player, Bailey was from 1981 to 1994 as a scout at his ex-club Edmonton Oilers, which had now been accepted into the NHL. With the Oilers he won the Stanley Cup five times as a scout between 1984 and 1990. While he received a Stanley Cup ring for every title he won, his name was only engraved on three of the five trophies (1985, 1987 and 1990). Now employed as a scouting boss at the Los Angeles Kings , he and his colleague, the former player and coach Mark Bavis , fell victim to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 when they both returned to Los Angeles on United Airlines Flight 175 wanted to. His family founded the Ace Bailey Children's Foundation in his honor .
